Will Hardy, Jazz Agree to HC Contract Extension Through 2030-31 NBA Season
The Utah Jazz announced Monday that they agreed to an extension with head coach Will Hardy through the 2030-31 NBA season.
Team governor Ryan Smith called Hardy a "a great leader, communicator, and ambassador" for the organization:
The deal comes even though the Jazz finished 14 games worse than their 31-51 record last year.
Granted, this is the first year Utah felt the full effects of the rebuild that was triggered when it traded away franchise cornerstones Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert in 2022. Going 37-45 in 2022-23 and then getting to 30-plus wins again in 2023-24 represented overachievement.
Extending Hardy now is both a strong endorsement of his work so far and a sign of how long the next phase for the franchise could last.
The Jazz are tied for the best odds (14 percent) of landing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft, which would mean getting to select Duke's Cooper Flagg.
Should that happen, they may be less inclined to trade away Lauri Markkanen and Walker Kessler, both of whom have been the subjects of steady speculation. With Flagg as the centerpiece, general manager Justin Zanik could prefer to leverage his draft capital into ready-made talent sooner than expected.
Without Flagg, Utah might still be waiting on the young star who can anchor its future. Markkanen performed at an All-Star level in 2022-23, but he turns 28 later this month. The $195.9 million extension he signed could have little bearing on how long he stays in Salt Lake City.
Hardy's priorities as head coach will dramatically shift in the month and years ahead depending what happens with the draft lottery and Markkanen. Whatever is in store, Smith and Zanik are clearly confident he's the man for the job.
