Trae Young, Hawks Disappoint Fans with Failed Comeback in NBA Play-In OT Loss to Heat
Trae Young pushed the Atlanta Hawks to overtime, but not into the playoffs, in a Friday night play-in tournament loss to the Miami Heat.
Young led the Hawks' late comeback before the Heat pulled ahead in extra time to claim a 123-114 win and the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Miami is now the first No. 10 seed to make it out of the play-in tournament.
Young, driver of the Hawks' fourth-quarter comeback, finished the game with a team-high 29 points. He drove to the basket for the layup that sent the play-in game to overtime.
He was then held to five points in five minutes as the Hawks were outscored 17-8 in extra time.
Young finished the game having recorded 11 assists. He also shot just 9-for-22 from the field and recorded four turnovers, including one in overtime.
He also missed out on the defensive rebound before Davion Mitchell closed out the game with a final three-pointer in the last 25 seconds of overtime.
The Hawks have not made it past the first round since the team's 2021 trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.
The team will now miss the playoffs for a second straight after missing two opportunities to win a playoff berth.
Young and the Hawks lost 120-95 to the Orlando Magic on Tuesday prior to Friday's defeat by the Heat. Some fans argued the back-to-back losses confirmed Atlanta shouldn't have been in the playoffs in the first place.
Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro and the Heat meanwhile advance to take on the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round. The series is set to begin with Game 1 Sunday night in Cleveland.
