Netflix Reveals 'Shooting Guards' Trailer About Gilbert Arenas and 2009 Wizards

Scott PolacekApr 15, 2025

Gilbert Arenas was one of the best guards in the NBA during his peak, but one of the defining moments of his career came when he was suspended for an incident involving guns in the Washington Wizards locker room.

Netflix is turning back the clock and reexamining that 2009 incident with interviews and footage in the latest installment of its Untold series.

Shooting Guards will debut on May 6, and Netflix dropped the trailer Tuesday:

The series will follow the 2009 incident that involved Arenas and Javaris Crittenton while also exploring the way it changed both of their lives and shaped the Wizards' campaign.

Arenas opened up about the incident in 2018 when he told the Action Network the confrontation started because of trash talking and not gambling debts. He said he talked plenty of trash to Crittenton during a card game, which led to the Georgia Tech product threatening him.

"It was about me calling his bluff," Arenas said when discussing why he then brought guns to the locker room two days later. "You say you're going to shoot me? Fine, I'll bring you the guns to do it."

That prompted Crittenton to pull a loaded gun, which cleared the Wizards locker room.

Both players were suspended for the rest of the season. Crittenton ended up never playing in the NBA again after that, while Washington eventually traded Arenas to the Orlando Magic.

Arenas was a three-time All-Star during his tenure with Washington, but he had an unceremonious end to his career with the Magic and Memphis Grizzlies. As for Crittenton, he played 113 games in his NBA career for the Los Angeles Lakers, Grizzlies and Wizards and was never more than a secondary contributor.

Crittenton was then sentenced to 23 years in prison with 17 more years on probation in 2015 after he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon stemming from a 2011 homicide case. However, WSBTV Atlanta reported in 2023 that he received a new sentence from the case that resulted in his release from prison.

The new sentence placed him on intensive probation and required him to wear a monitoring device. It also placed a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m curfew on him and featured 7,200 hours of community service during the first 10 years of probation.

Crittenton made an appearance on Arenas' podcast following his release and discussed their relationship, the locker room incident and the NBA.
