Kentucky Beats Illinois, Reaches 1st Sweet 16 Since 2019 as Fans Praise HC Mark Pope
Koby Brea led the Kentucky Wildcats with 23 points in a 84-75 win over the Illinois Fighting Illini, propelling Kentucky to its first Sweet 16 appearance since 2019.
In addition to Brea’s 23 points he added six rebounds and one steal while shooting 10-of-16 from the field and 3-of-8 from the three-point line in the victory. Senior Lamont Butler added 14 points and five assists and Otega Oweh had 15 points.
On the other side of the court, junior Kylan Boswell posted 23 points, shooting 9-of-14 from the field in addition to 19 points from center Tomislav Ivisic, who shot 5-of-12 from three-point range.
With the win, Kentucky will advance to face the Tennessee Volunteers in the Sweet 16, marking their first appearance since they lost 77-71 to Auburn. The 2019 Wildcats team included six current NBA players, including Tyler Herro, PJ Washington, Keldon Johnson and Immanuel Quickley.
Fans praised the Wildcats, Brea and head coach Mark Pope for his impressive first season with the team after taking over from John Calipari.
Brea kicked off scoring for the Wildcats with a layup off a turnover, assisted by Butler, which helped spark his 10-point half for Kentucky. Ivisic contributed 10 points for the Fighting Illini as the Wildcats took a 37-32 lead into halftime.
Kentucky pulled away with a 16-point lead with 15 minutes left, including an 8-0 run to start the second quarter. However, the Fighting Illini battled back to cut the deficit to nine.
Thanks to a 10-point run by Brea, which included two three-pointers, the Wildcats extended their lead back to 16 with just over 9:30 left in regulation. Though it appeared the Wildcats were pulling away, the Illini continued to fight, closing the gap to eight points with under two minutes remaining, before Kentucky sank several free throws to ice the game.
The Fighting Illini's turnovers were their ultimate demise, keeping them out of the game, with 14 turnovers leading to 26 points for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats and Volunteers will kick off their Sweet 16 matchup on Friday in Indianapolis. Kentucky has played Tennessee twice this year, winning both matchups.
