NBA News: Kings' Domantas Sabonis Reportedly Out At Least 10 Days with Ankle Injury
Amid their push to reach the playoffs, the Sacramento Kings will be without one of their stars for an extended period.
Per ESPN's Shams Charania, Domantas Sabonis has a sprained ankle and is set to miss at least 10 days while recovering from the injury, which he suffered in Monday's win over the Memphis Grizzlies.
Sabonis is putting up some of the best numbers of his career this year, averaging 19.2 points, 13.9 rebounds and 6.2 assists. He currently leads the league in rebounds per game.
Sabonis has been mostly healthy this season but missed six consecutive games because of a hamstring strain earlier this month. He returned to the court last Friday before injuring his ankle on Monday.
The Kings are 3-6 without their starting big man this season.
Despite firing head coach Mike Brown in December and trading star point guard De'Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs before the trade deadline, Sacramento has managed to stay in the playoff race.
The Kings are currently in ninth place in the Western Conference, 2.5 games ahead of the struggling Dallas Mavericks and 3.5 games behind the No. 8-seeded Los Angeles Clippers.
Reaching the play-in and potentially the playoffs is still well within reason for Sacramento, but having Sabonis out during a crucial stretch will make things much more difficult.
With no Sabonis, the Kings will rely heavily on Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan for their offensive production. LaVine, who came to Sacramento as part of the Fox trade, is averaging 22.7 points per game with the Kings while DeRozan is putting up 22.2 points per contest.
The Kings will likely shift Jonas Valančiūnas, a trade deadline acquisition, into the starting center spot for the time being. Valančiūnas is putting up 9.5 points and 8.1 rebounds since joining Sacramento in February.
