Steve Kerr Passes Al Attles to Become All-Time Winningest HC in Warriors History
Steve Kerr is the winningest coach in Golden State Warriors franchise history.
Kerr celebrated his franchise-record 558th career regular-season win during the Warriors' 97-94 Saturday night win over the New York Knicks.
The Warriors celebrated Kerr's accomplishment on the screen at Chase Center:
Al Attles set the previous franchise record by coaching the Warriors to 557 wins between 1970 and 1983.
The family of Attles, who died last August at age 87, celebrated with Kerr after the record-breaking win, per Danny Emerson of the Bay Area News Group:
Kerr, who boasts a career record of 558-302, also ranks first in franchise history with a win percentage of .649.
That ranks as the second-best win percentage among active coaches, as well as the fifth-best in NBA history among all coaches with at least 300 wins, per Warriors PR.
Only Attles and Kerr have ever led the Warriors to more than 57 wins in a single season. Kerr accomplished the feat six times between 2014 and 2019.
"It's amazing to do this without any talent at all. I've just had to coach up these guys," Kerr told NBC Sports Bay Area's Kerith Burke after the win over the Nets (h/t Joel Soria.)
Kerr continued: "To be able to coach Steph Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, I mean, we've been blessed with such incredible rosters the entire 11 years. And more than anything, this is a reflection of the entire organizational strength, stability, the collaboration we all share, the players, coaches, management, ownership. We have an incredible collection of people, and the record is just a reflection of that."
Draymond Green meanwhile said Saturday night it was "incredible" to see Kerr break the regular-season record.
"I'm thankful that I've been here for actually every single one of his wins," Green said. "He's a special guy. He's made this place a special place... We're lucky to have such a winner like that."
Kerr also holds the Warriors franchise record with 99 playoff wins in seven postseason runs, four of which ended with NBA titles.
Attles, who coached the Warriors to a championship in 1975, ranks second with 31 career playoff wins.
The 2024-25 Warriors have won seven straight games, as have the Minnesota Timberwolves as both teams battle for the No. 6 seed. The Warriors currently sit half a game and a tiebreaker ahead of the Timberwolves for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the West.
