Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Morgan Schneiderlin, Angel Di Maria
Southampton star Morgan Schneiderlin can move to Old Trafford for the right fee this summer, while Paris Saint-Germain are hoping to tempt the Red Devils into selling Angel Di Maria with a player-plus-cash offer.
France international Schneiderlin returned to pre-season training at Southampton on Tuesday. Saints manager Ronald Koeman was quoted by the Daily Mail's Matt Barlow as saying the midfielder can leave—but only for the right price, as the Saints have already rejected one United offer:
"Every player has his price and we have a good experience of selling players. If there is interest in Morgan Schneiderlin, then okay, but it has to be at a price that the club wants. He is one of the key players of our team. He is an international player. But I don’t think that is a problem for Man United.
"
Two weeks ago we had a bid from Manchester United. It wasn’t enough. It wasn’t serious. And no more bids up to today. I know the situation. I spoke a lot with Morgan. Last season we said stop all this business with Morgan because we are not selling any more players. That was difficult but he came back after a few days with good motivation and he had a great season. But we know the situation. There is a lot of interest in the player.
The Saints were pleased to see Schneiderlin remain at St. Mary's last summer despite an exodus of players which saw prominent figures Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert all make their way to Liverpool.
He would go on to become an even more important part of Koeman's setup as the south-coast club finished seventh in the Premier League, but the manager appears willing to accept a loss this time around:
"With a club like Man United, we know it is difficult to keep the player. If they pay, okay, he can make the transfer. But I hope if there is any business that it’s soon, because that’s best for the player and for us.
It is important for the player to do a good pre-season. We have to prepare for what we’d have to do if we sell the player. We will see what happens in the next few days. I don’t talk about money, about numbers. It’s not my business. It’s up to the club.
"
Louis van Gaal took time to assemble his preferred midfield selection last term, and Michael Carrick was instrumental to any success, but his injury absence near campaign's end exposed a lack of engine-room depth.
Another name linked with the English giants is Van Gaal's former Bayern Munich charge Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Bleacher Report's Andy Brassell recently weighed his potential signing against that of Schneiderlin:
Should he move to Old Trafford this summer, Schneiderlin would link up with former Saints team-mate Luke Shaw and bring an end to two years of consistent speculation regarding his future.
The playmaker was set to return to pre-season training on Monday but was absent through illness, an excuse that Alex Shaw of ESPN isn't buying:
United will make their return to the Champions League in the coming season and are looking to beef up their squad, with Daley Blind and Ander Herrera already bringing improved quality in central midfield. That being said, anchor Schneiderlin would act as more of the specialist general whom the club have missed for some time now.
Barlow asserts that a bid closer to £30 million will be required in order to seal the move.
Paris Saint-Germain Readying Swap Deal for Di Maria

Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain are back in the hunt for long-term target Di Maria and are willing to offer right-back Gregory van der Wiel as part of a swap deal in order to land their man.
That's according to Bleacher Report's Jonathan Johnson, who referenced French radio station RMC as reporting that a player-plus-cash bid of "around €50 million (£35.6 million) plus Van der Wiel" is on the horizon:
It's a long way shy of the £59.7 million United forked out to sign Di Maria from Real Madrid 12 months ago, and one can bet the Premier League club are keen to make their money back.
The winger endured a tough maiden campaign in England but has been able to reproduce some of his best form while on international duty with Argentina. However, any deal may be delayed after Spanish newspaper AS confirmed that Di Maria picked up an injury at the 2015 Copa America, at which the Albiceleste finished second:
Van der Wiel worked with Van Gaal during his time at the helm of the Dutch national team, but the right-back may not be a priority for United, who look set to sign Torino's Matteo Darmian.
That's according to Sky Sports, who reported on Tuesday that the Red Devils had agreed a deal for the Italy right-back, hoping to acquire an upgrade on Antonio Valencia and Rafael:
With just a year left on his PSG contract, it's unlikely Van der Wiel would be deemed valuable enough to make up the rest of United's Di Maria valuation, and the club would likely demand a straight-cash deal.
That being said, Van Gaal may not have any plans to part ways with the Argentina ace just yet, who still managed to make 10 assists in just 20 Premier League starts last season.
