Luka Doncic Rumors: Mavs, Wolves Didn't Specifically Discuss Star Before Lakers Trade
Trade discussions between the Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves didn't "specifically" involve Luka Dončić before he was moved to the Los Angeles Lakers, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
"The Mavericks' talks with Milwaukee and Minnesota, as described to me, were very brief in nature and intentionally broad and vague … meaning they did not specifically identify Dončić," Stein wrote Sunday.
Sam Amick of The Athletic initially reported that the Mavericks approached the Timberwolves regarding a swap involving Dončić and Anthony Edwards.
Dallas eventually dealt the superstar forward to Los Angeles for a package that included Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick.
As for the Timberwolves, they stood pat at the Feb. 6 trade deadline.
Dončić has taken some time to adjust to the change of scenery, averaging 21.0 points and 8.6 rebounds per game on 37.3/24.1/76.5 shooting splits in seven appearances with the Lakers.
He's grown more comfortable as of late, surpassing 30 points in two of his past four games.
While Dallas didn't seem to explicitly mention Dončić during the brief negotiations with Minnesota, the Timberwolves likely wouldn't have parted ways with Edwards to acquire him. Amick noted that Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison was "promptly told no" when reaching out regarding Edwards.
Minnesota has struggled to build upon its 2024 Western Conference Finals appearance, currently sitting at No. 9 in the West standings with a 32-29 record despite owning the eighth-best net rating in the association (via NBA.com).
The Timberwolves and Mavericks reportedly talked prior to the trade deadline, but Dončić wasn't specifically brought up.
