Hugh Freeze Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer; Auburn HC Expected to Make Full Recovery
Auburn football head coach Hugh Freeze was diagnosed with an early form of prostate cancer, the school announced on Friday.
Per the announcement, Freeze's doctors have advised that it is "very treatable and curable" and he's "expected to make a full recovery."
He'll also continue with his regular coaching duties and responsibilities throughout the offseason while receiving treatment.
Freeze is entering his third season with the Tigers after taking over as their head coach in Nov. 2022.
He owns an overall college head coaching record of 94-57 with Auburn, Arkansas State, Mississippi and Liberty.
Freeze holds an 11-14 record during his Tigers tenure, making a bowl appearance in 2023. Auburn is coming off a 5-7 finish in 2024.
There are multiple encouraging signs that Freeze's team can have a swift turnaround during the upcoming season, as the Tigers' 2025 transfer portal class was ranked No. 8 in the country by 247Sports.
Auburn will be adding key players including quarterback Jackson Arnold, wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. and offensive tackle Xavier Chaplin.
The Tigers have also been active on the recruiting front, as their 2025 recruiting class sat at No. 7 in the nation (via 247Sports).
Auburn's offseason program will continue with spring practices, which are set to begin on March 25 before the school's A-Day game on April 12 at Jordan-Hare Stadium (h/t 247Sports' Jason Caldwell).
Freeze is expected to completely recover following his prostate cancer diagnosis, and it shouldn't impact his ability to patrol the sidelines for the Tigers in 2025.
