J.J. Barea Re-Signs with Mavericks: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction
Slowly but surely, the Dallas Mavericks are filling out their bench. According to ESPN's Tim MacMahon, on July 16, the Mavs agreed to terms with J.J. Barea on a four-year deal worth $16 million. McMahon noted Barea originally agreed to a two-year, $5.7 million deal on July 6 but renegotiated the larger contract after DeAndre Jordan spurned the Mavs for the Clippers.
The 31-year-old appeared in 77 games last year for the Mavs, averaging 7.5 points and 3.4 assists in 17.7 minutes a night. Barea didn't exactly contribute a ton on the defensive end, but the Dallas offense was 3.5 points better per 100 possessions with him on the floor, per NBA.com.
Barea's performance in the Mavs' title run in 2010-11 earned him a nice payday from the Minnesota Timberwolves, and it also set unrealistic expectations for what kind of point guard he can be in the NBA.
While Dallas would be in trouble if Barea starts on a nightly basis, he's at least a solid option to come off the bench. Head coach Rick Carlisle also knows what strings to pull to get him to perform to his maximum potential. Between that and Barea's reasonable salary, the Mavericks did a nice job of using what limited cap space they have to fortify their squad.
