Wladimir Klitschko vs. Tyson Fury Fight Announced: Latest Details, Date and More

Mike ChiariJul 6, 2015

World heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko hasn't lost a fight since 2004, but the Ukrainian superstar may face his toughest challenge yet this fall in the form of the undefeated Tyson Fury.

According to Hennessy Sports, Dr. Steelhammer will defend his titles against the British challenger this October.

There was initially talk regarding the fight taking place in Russia, per Luke Furman of BoxingScene.com, but the sides were reportedly able to reach an agreement to lock horns Oct. 24 in Dusseldorf, Germany, instead.

According to ESPN.com's Dan Rafael, Klitschko and Fury went down to the wire in their negotiations before settling on the parameters:

Following the announcement, Klitschko gave his thoughts on the bout, via his Twitter account:

While Klitschko undoubtedly would have had his fair share of supporters in Russia, Germany has been his go-to venue, as the vast majority of his 67 professional fights have taken place there.

The 39-year-old Klitschko is riding a 22-fight winning streak while the 26-year-old Fury has never lost in 24 outings. Many have questioned Fury's accomplishments, though, including Klitschko himself, according to Sky Sports:

"

I haven't watched too many fights of Tyson Fury. I've heard a couple of things in the background and his involvement in fights, especially verbal fights. I think he is more famous for his verbal fighting than the actual boxing fighting. Obviously he's had 20 something fights - I haven't watched his fights in particular.

"

Neither Klitschko nor Fury has gone up against a particularly high level of competition over the course of their respective careers, but that is an indictment of the heavyweight division more than anything.

Klitschko has dominated largely due to his remarkable reach and height at 6'6", but Fury is able to match him in that regard at 6'9", which should make their meeting a particularly intriguing battle.

While Klitschko is by far the most accomplished boxer Fury has ever faced, his unblemished record makes him the first true threat in a very long time to the man who has dominated the heavyweight division for more than a decade.
