Luka Doncic, Kevin Durant Among NBA Stars Eligible for Summer 2025 Contract Extensions
While there has been a lot made about the summer of 2026 as a potential free-agent haven for NBA teams, the upcoming offseason figures to be a notable one for clubs with star players eligible for contract extensions.
ESPN's Bobby Marks compiled a list of extension-eligible candidates this offseason that includes 14 marquee names:
Luka Donฤiฤ
Kevin Durant
Nikola Jokiฤ
De'Aaron Fox
Devin Booker
Trae Young
Karl-Anthony Towns
Darius Garland
Ja Morant
Tyler Herro
Damian Lillard
CJ McCollum
Kristaps Porziลฤฃis
Jaren Jackson Jr.
Donฤiฤ's contract situation has already been well-documented in the wake of his trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. He's no longer eligible for the five-year, $345 million supermax extension if he had remained with the Dallas Mavericks.
Marks did note Donฤiฤ's best path to maximizing his long-term earnings would be to sign a three-year extension this summer with a player option for 2028-29 when he will have 10 years of service time to recoup some of the money he will miss out on.
Durant's status is one that will be worth monitoring this summer. He reportedly wasn't happy to be mentioned in rumors prior to the Feb. 6 trade deadline, and the Phoenix Suns might be inclined to move in a different direction if they either miss the playoffs altogether or have another early exit.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst recently said (h/t Ashish Mathur of HoopsWire) that Durant, who has one year and $54.7 million remaining on his current contract, will "probably" get traded this summer.
Another name to keep an eye on for a trade could be Ja Morant. It would seem odd for the Memphis Grizzlies to shop their star point guard when he will have three years remaining on his current contract, but one executive recently floated the possibility to The Ringer's Howard Beck if the team has an early playoff exit.
Marks noted Jokiฤ and Towns could add three years and $212 million to their current supermax contracts if they were to decline their player options for the 2027-28 season.
De'Aaron Fox turned down a three-year, $165 million extension from the Sacramento Kings before the start of this season with the goal of getting a richer deal in the summer of 2025.
When Fox does sign the contract, it will likely be with the San Antonio Spurs after he was traded to the club on Feb. 3. The most he can sign for is $229 million over four years this summer.
There's going to be a lot of money thrown around this summer with teams trying to lock in their star players for years to come rather than run the risk of potentially losing them for nothing when they become eligible for free agency.
