Anthony Edwards, Wemby, Jokic Reveal Reactions to Luka, Anthony Davis, Lakers Trade
While most fans and analysts had their jaws on the floor when Luka Dončić was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers in a package that also included Anthony Davis, the reaction from some of the NBA's top stars wasn't nearly as dramatic.
Speaking to The Athletic's Joe Vardon, Anthony Edwards' response to the trade was focused on the Minnesota Timberwolves' remaining game against the Lakers in the regular season.
"It made it fun again because I think we play the Lakers again one more time, so it should be fun," Edwards said.
The matchup between the Timberwolves and Lakers at Crypto.com Arena will be played on Feb. 27. Minnesota has won two of the first three meetings with the Lakers this season, but the last game was on Dec. 13.
San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was sympathetic to Mavericks fans who were angered by the deal.
"What I remember from it, what really strikes me, is how the Mavs fans are hurting, how they feel," Wembanyama said.
Dallas fans continue to voice their anger toward the organization for the trade. Some have been ejected from home games due to what the team has said were violations of the NBA's code of conduct. There have also been protests outside of American Airlines Center since the trade went down.
Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić didn't really have much of a take about it, other than to say players may have noticed it more than they normally would have because of the caliber of player traded away by Dallas.
"I think a trade is not such a big thing, but if you trade someone like that, I think it becomes a little bit of a big thing, and maybe players become a little bit serious about it," Jokić told Vardon.
The ripple effects of the trade are still being felt and will likely continue to be for years to come. Dončić is still working his way back into playing shape after missing six weeks due to a strained calf.
Dallas only got a taste of what Davis will bring to the table because he suffered a left adductor strain in his debut against the Houston Rockets on Feb. 8. He finished with 26 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists in 31 minutes prior to the injury.
The Lakers were playing their best basketball of the season prior to the All-Star break. They won 12 of their last 15 games overall. Dončić has only played 47 minutes across two games, but his workload will continue to increase as he gets healthier and more comfortable in his new surroundings.
