Why Jordan Poole Reportedly Was Traded by Wizards for CJ McCollum to Pelicans
The Washington Wizards' decision to trade guard Jordan Poole to the New Orleans Pelicans as part of a four-player deal that acquired veteran sharpshooter CJ McCollum reportedly stemmed from the team's desire to improve both in the short term and the long term.
Josh Robbins and William Guillory of The Athletic reported that by trading Poole on Tuesday, the Wizards "hope to further increase their ball movement and increase the playmaking opportunities and shot opportunities for the team’s young players, including whomever the Wizards select in this year’s draft, while also incorporating more experienced players such as Khris Middleton, Corey Kispert and McCollum into the mix."

Poole was sent to the Pelicans along with Saddiq Bey and the No. 40 pick in Wednesday's NBA draft to acquire McCollum, veteran center Kelly Olynyk and a future second-round pick. The chance to offload Poole's "onerous contract" was cited as a key reason for the deal, as he's set to make $31.8 million in the 2025-26 season and $34 million the following year.
By moving that contract off the books, Robbins and Guillory noted that the Wizards "now project to have as much as $100 million in cap space for the summer of 2026 — cap space that could open an array of roster-construction avenues but most likely will be used that summer to accept contracts in trades if those contracts include future draft picks attached to them." Team president Michael Winger and general manager Will Dawkins, who are entering their third season together in Washington, have made it clear that the franchise has "prioritized adding future draft picks."
Despite acquiring a reliable veteran like McCollum, the Wizards reportedly are in no rush to accelerate their rebuild. Robbins and Guillory pointed out that "one of the Wizards’ priorities is to retain their own first-round pick for the 2026 draft." The pick would be sent to the New York Knicks if it falls outside the top eight, stemming from a 2020 trade between the two teams. Tuesday's trade allows the Wizards to have "more player-development opportunities for their youngest players and, in the process, likely will increase the likelihood of retaining their 2026 first-round pick."
Poole was moved from shooting guard to point guard at the start of this season, and he was able to get back to respectable averages of 20.5 points, 4.5 assists and 1.3 steals. He had averaged just 17.4 points in his first season in Washington in 2023-24. However, his individual success this year made a minimal impact on the Wizards, who ranked last in the Eastern Conference with an 18-64 record.
Poole is joining a Pelicans team that didn't fare any better this past season, as an injury-riddled year resulted in a 21-61 finish. He should be motivated to revive his career and make more of an impact while playing alongside star forward Zion Williamson.
