4'4" Rico Abreu Captures 1st Stock-Car Victory of His Career at NAPA 150
Independence Day 2015 is a day that Rico Abreu will never forget.
The 23-year-old Abreu won the pole at the NAPA 150 at Columbus Motor Speedway and then beat 21 other drivers on Saturday to get his first stock-car win. The victory came in just his seventh career start.
While any victory would be notable for a driver, this one has a bit of a backstory. The 4'4" Abreu was born with achondroplasia, a genetic disorder that is the most common cause of dwarfism. According to ESPN.com, Abreu's car has been modified in order to accommodate the driver: "Pedals and the steering column are extended and his racing seat uses less room behind it, but that's it. He uses foot blocks to build up the accelerator area so he can drive."
Thanks to his customized vehicle, he can now say that he has won a stock-car race.
Abreu, who led a race-high 86 laps, talked about his victory after the race:
