Top Recruits to Watch
Rashan Gary, DT
Other than the allure of college football's next wave of top talent all in one place is the fact the event in Oregon sometimes features major decisions.
For example, Rashan Gary, the No. 1 player in the 2016 class at 247Sports, has yet to make a decision. His short list? Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and Georgia, among others.
Gary might not make a decision in Oregon, but his presence as five or more of the nation's top programs swing in the balance makes for an entertaining time.
Of course, it helps he is such a disruptive player sure to steal some of the attention from the high-profile quarterbacks. Last year alone, the New Jersey native recorded 14 sacks and 55 tackles.
Even on a field of more than 100 of the nation's best players, Gary won't have any problems sticking out and making a name for himself.
Jacob Eason, QB
Jacob Eason out of Washington might remind many of Matthew Stafford.
Eason, a 5-star recruit committed to Georgia, stands strong at 6'5" and 205 pounds, and there's no question he's perhaps the top player at the event.
MaxPreps took a look at some of his ridiculous throws:
Last year, Eason threw for 2,829 yards and 32 touchdowns with three picks, showing an uncanny pocket presence as well as an ability to read defenses and make the right throws into tight windows.
Now throw him into Oregon with some of the best weapons in the country and, well, there's no doubt Eason is about to put on a show and do nothing short of further exciting Georgia fans.
Derrick Brown, DT
To say a major influx of defensive line talent is about to take the collegiate realm by storm would be a gross understatement.
Gary leads the way, but Georgia native Derrick Brown isn't far behind.
A 5-star tackle, Brown is also one of the more interesting cases with his commitment status up in the air. The usual top-flight suspects line the list—Georgia, Alabama and Auburn are the notables.
While the 6'4", 314-pound Brown's recruiting status is a point of awe, so is his on-field game. Get this—last year he exploded for 17.5 sacks and 101 tackles, 26 for loss.
Again, quarterbacks own the headlines and get the credit. But Brown makes a name for himself by shutting down gunslingers and their arms. Along with others such as Gary, defense might rule this year's edition of The Opening.
