NBA Free Agents 2015: Grades for Top Signings, Predictions for Remaining Players

Jared JohnsonJul 5, 2015

The NBA free-agency season is still moving swiftly onward after four full days.

Most of the top players have already made their decisions, which is good news for the teams that landed them, since those squads can now work on filling out their rosters. However, the teams that missed out on their biggest targets now have to look for quality talents in the lower free-agent tiers.

Let's hand out grades for some of the most major signing agreements thus far and then make predictions for a few of the best players who are still on the market.

Predictions for Key Players Still On the Market

David West (Unrestricted)

David West is not going to settle for a middling team like the Indiana Pacers. The 34-year-old power forward has yet to win a championship ring in his successful career and is looking to sign with a title contender, per WTHR Channel 13's Bob Kravitz

West is certainly getting nibbles from the right teams, then.

Besides the Spurs and Cavaliers, the Washington Wizards have also been after the 12-year veteran, per ESPN's Marc Stein. Money seems to be of little significance to West, who turned down his $12.6 million option to play for the Pacers next season in search of a new deal with a contender that will surely earn him less.

Although title contention is probably the biggest factor for West, his role on the team has to matter at least a little bit. He doesn't seem like the type of player who would enjoy a fringe rotation spot.

Of the three aforementioned teams, Cleveland has the best title odds. The combination of the Cavs' excellent talent and the fact that they play in the weaker Eastern Conference assures that. However, they will also have a logjam at the power forward position. Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson play that position, and LeBron James gets minutes there at times, as well.

With centers Timofey Mozgov and Anderson Varejao also in tow, West could end up as the odd man out in Cleveland's big-man rotation.

The Wizards, meanwhile, aren't quite title contenders, but they can probably offer West a starting role. Per Stein, Washington is trying to trade Nene, its starting power forward during the 2014-15 season, which means there could be an opening at the 4 spot.

However, the Spurs can offer West the best mix of strong championship odds and minutes. San Antonio has Tim Duncan and the recently acquired LaMarcus Aldridge starting at its post positions, but the rotation bigs from last season, Tiago Splitter and Aron Baynes, left town via trade and free agency, respectively.

The allure of a sixth-man role with a legitimate title contender should be too much for West to refuse.

Prediction: West signs with the San Antonio Spurs.

Louis Williams (Unrestricted)

Louis Williams is a known commodity, but he can still provide plenty of value in a bench-scorer role.

The 28-year-old combo guard averaged a career-high 22.2 points per 36 minutes last season as the Toronto Raptors' sixth man, a number that should cause plenty of teams to seek out Williams' services this summer. He'll be valuable to teams that need better guard depth, reserve scoring or both.

The Miami Heat and Williams have shown mutual interest, per the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson. The Heat ranked No. 28 in bench scoring during the 2014-15 season, per HoopStats.com, but Williams could give that ranking a nice boost.

However, as Jackson noted, the acquisition would have to be a sign-and-trade because of the Heat's limited cap space. Obviously, the move would require cooperation from Toronto.

Speaking of the Raptors, they probably still have the best shot at retaining Williams. The scoring guard said the following about his future in Toronto after winning the Sixth Man of the Year award April 20, per USA Today's Sam Amick:

"

I'm very confident that this is where I'm going to be for a number of years in the future. So hopefully it works out there. I'm a creature of habit, a product of my environment. And once I'm somewhere I like to be comfortable there. And this team, this city and this organization has embraced me as one of their own and I look forward to being here.

"

Maybe Williams changed his tune after the Raptors got swept by the Washington Wizards in the first round of the playoffs. Or maybe he didn't.

Either way, the super sixth man had arguably the best season of his career in 2014-15, and he would be smart to look for a deal with the team he found so much success with.

Prediction: Williams re-signs with the Toronto Raptors.

Josh Smith (Unrestricted)

Is Josh Smith a star or a scrub? It depends on the night, and whichever team signs him will have to realize this.

But somewhat surprisingly, rumors haven't abounded with the mercurial power forward thus far. One team has shown interest, however.

Sacramento could use some more shooting in its frontcourt. DeMarcus Cousins and Willie Cauley-Stein are not stretch big men by any means, and Smith could add that dimension. Many teams have lived with the 29-year-old's three-point hoists throughout his career, but Smith shot 27-of-71 (38 percent) for the Houston Rockets in the 2015 playoffs. He might be due for some respect behind the arc moving forward, which could help Sacramento.

However, Smith may not want to waste precious years with a team that is unlikely to contend in the near future.

In fact, re-signing with the Rockets is probably the power forward's most likely route. He told the following to Jenny Dial Creech of the Houston Chronicle about his future in Space City:

"

I like the future if we can keep all the pieces together. I like what the future holds for us. You never know in free agency what may occur. The city of Houston and this team has definitely embraced me for my individuality and the way I play the game. It would be great to do something special for the city and for this team.

"

The Rockets missed out on Aldridge, who's also a power forward, and the cap space they saved there should be more than enough to retain Smith. He was a valuable, versatile player for Houston, whether as a starter or off the bench, and makes the team dynamic when he's on his game.

Similar to West, the pull of title contention will be difficult for Smith to resist, and the Rockets would love to have him back for depth.

Prediction: Smith re-signs with the Houston Rockets.
