Barcelona Transfer News: Arda Turan Deal Looms, Gerson Rumours Grow
Atletico Madrid midfielder Arda Turan has chosen to join Barcelona over Chelsea or Manchester United, according to Albert Roge of Sport.
As noted by Roge, the Turkish star "will become the second signing of the summer" for Luis Enrique, who captured Sevilla right-back Aleix Vidal last month. The Blaugrana will pay €35 million (approximately £25 million) for his arrival, which is slightly lower than the player's €41 million (£29 million) buyout clause, according to Marca.
However, like Vidal, Turan won't be able to represent Barca in competitive matches until January 2016, when the club's transfer ban is lifted. Roge's report indicates it is yet to be revealed where he will play during the first half of the 2015-16 season. Although staying with Atletico would make sense, it's unlikely Enrique will want Turan aiding the hopes of a potential title rival.

The 28-year-old midfielder will be used in numerous roles at the Camp Nou. He is usually situated on the wings, but he can move centrally and is the type of player who works in pockets of space. Turan is a battler, someone who will increase Barca's doggedness in a similar manner to what Ivan Rakitic has managed, and he will also work hard to retain possession for the side.
WhoScored.com provided a breakdown of his stats from last season:
B/R UK's Andy Brassell discussed Turan's qualities:
He may be joined in Catalonia by Fluminense attacking midfielder Gerson, according to Brazilian newspaper Lance (h/t Marca). Barca director of football Raul Sanllehi has reportedly "held talks" with the club's officials and the player's father after Juventus made a €16 million offer for his services.
Barca paid €3 million for first refusal on the player in June, reported by Joaqium Piera of Sport. According to O Dia (h/t Marca), the European champions have five days to decide whether or not they wish to challenge Juve's offer.
It is suggested Barca will ask for more time, but that the presence of financial director Nestor Amela in Brazil indicates the club are serious about snapping Gerson up. He is a powerful specimen who loves to stride forward and strike the ball, as highlighted below:
Enrique will add to the functionality of his team with the signing of Turan, a player who can slot in wherever needed. Gerson will be one for the future if he does sign, but he may initially find it difficult to gain traction at the club.
Barca's transfer ban isn't slowing down their willingness to do business, although supporters will have to wait six months to see any of their new signings in action. As proved with the club's recent treble win, Enrique and his squad are well stocked in the meantime.
