Undrafted NBA Free Agents 2015: Latest Details on the Biggest Signings

Timothy RappJun 25, 2015

Players end up going undrafted each year in the NBA draft for a number of reasons. Perhaps injuries or character concerns dropped them down the board. Maybe they got bad advice and shouldn't have left college early in the first place.

Whatever the case may be, some talented players always fall through the cracks and are quickly scooped up by NBA teams and added to their summer league rosters. This year was no exception.

Perhaps one of the most talented players to go undrafted was Washington's Robert Upshaw. He wasn't without a team for long, however, per Jeff Goodman of ESPN:

Upshaw's talent is immense, but the potential-laden center was dismissed from Washington's team this season and later admitted he dealt with drug addiction. Both he and the Lakers will be hoping he's turned a new leaf.

The Lakers doubled down on undrafted big men, also bringing aboard Arizona's Brandon Ashley, per Shams Charania of RealGM.com:

The moves aren't a surprise. The Lakers passed on the chance to take Jahlil Okafor at No. 2, instead opting to select guard D'Angelo Russell. While that suggests the team feels it can grab a dynamic big man in free agency, adding some potential security in the post made sense, even if it was simply for the summer league roster.

Meanwhile, only one of the Harrison twins was drafted on the evening. While Andrew Harrison went No. 44 overall and ended up with the Memphis Grizzlies, Aaron Harrison had to wait until after the draft to join the Charlotte Hornets, per Goodman:

Perhaps the Harrison twins would have been better suited returning to Kentucky.

Of course, that was the theme for many of the players looking for teams on Friday morning. Dez Wells wasn't one of them, of course, as he spent four years in college. After the draft, the Washington Wizards came calling, per Charania:

Meanwhile, Terran Petteway made his way to the Atlanta Hawks, per Charania:

The Philadelphia 76ers, who had a slew of picks on the night, were just as busy after the draft. They quickly snagged Vince Hunter, per Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders:

And the Sixers also nabbed Arizona's scrappy T.J. McConnell, too, as Bruce Pascoe of the Arizona Daily Star reported:

Finally, of the big names to be scooped up on the night, one of the heroes from Duke's run to a national championship, Quinn Cook, ended up with the Oklahoma City Thunder, per Charania:

It took a couple of days, but Alexander was eventually signed to the Brooklyn Nets' summer league roster, according to Jeremy Woo of Sports Illustrated:

Gary Parrish of CBS felt that a few of the undrafted players should serve as a cautionary tale for future players:

Christian Wood will probably end up on a summer league roster; the talent is unmistakable. But something about him clearly scared teams away on Thursday evening, and he'll have an uphill battle to prove he is worth a franchise's investment.

Even the players who landed on a summer league roster will face a struggle; their spots with their clubs are hardly assured, and they'll have to fight for a spot on the bench. Ultimately, that struggle will prove that talent only takes you so far.
