What Can Dan Skuta Offer the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015?

Evan ReierJun 25, 2015

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed a flurry of free agents once the window began, with one of the more accomplished and notable players being Dan Skuta. Skuta's time with the San Francisco 49ers and the Cincinnati Bengals saw improvement and consistency, but can he bring the same to Duval County?

Skuta made it into the NFL the hard way, signing as an undrafted free agent with the Bengals in 2009 after decent success at Grand Valley State. It's impressive that Skuta has made it to this point, and that typically is a sign of the type of hardworking player you want on your team.

However, while Skuta has made himself a solid NFL career, what does he truly offer? He will be making $4.6 million this year ($2.6 million plus a $2.0 million roster bonus), and that's a considerable paycheck to be doling out.

And besides his 2014 season, Skuta doesn't necessarily have an astounding career stat sheet, as seen in the table below.

YearSolo TacklesSacksForced FumblesPasses Defended
20096000
201011020
2011160.510
201215001
201321002
2014255.031

However, Skuta has worked his way to this point, and considering the success he had in San Francisco, it's easy to see that he is just about at his peak. While some struggling teams sign past-prime vets, the Jaguars were able to get their hands on one with a few good years left.

In the table, the major jump in stats happens in the aforementioned 2014 season, where he had five sacks and forced three fumbles. Both were career highs, and in the case of the sacks, 2014 was just the first season he was able to garner more than one full sack.

So this poses the question: Was 2014 a coming of age for Skuta or a fluke season?

Well, it's not easy to tell. But another point to consider about 2014 is that it was a transition time for the 49ers' linebacker core. So, with the team's situation in mind, it really seems like Skuta made the most of his chance.

Another important thing to consider is that Skuta will be coming in as the starting strong-side linebacker, and will be head coach Gus Bradley's first true "Otto". The Otto sees a combination of a traditional "Sam" (strong) linebacker along with a defensive end and can grow from there.

As Skuta says in the video interview below, he's a versatile player with a lot to offer and should fit the Otto perfectly.

His multidimensional ability will be vital to his overall play and raises his floor of performance. The 29-year-old may not have the best game in some duties, but if he's rushing the QB and getting pressure, it may not mean too much.

Another major bonus that the Jaguars get in Skuta is a calm and collected veteran. He will be entering his seventh season in the NFL, and while it'll be his first in this big of a role, he's got experience in the regular season and in the playoffs.

The defense getting a veteran to help steady the waters along with notable veterans Sen'Derrick Marks and Paul Posluszny will mean a lot. This team is looking like it will be competing in a lot more games, and it'll need composure to handle that.

You shouldn't judge his first season with Jacksonville until the very end, but personally, the feeling is optimistic. The Jaguars knew what they were getting, and it's not like there was an exceptional crop of Skuta-esque players available.

Skuta is a consistent performer with veteran experience and versatile ability. He's not a legendary player, but those three characteristics are exactly what the Jaguars were looking for in their Otto, and they've gotten it.

What do you think of Skuta? Is he a bust, playmaker or somewhere in between? Answer the poll, and comment below!
