College World Series 2015: Latest Comments Before Vanderbilt vs. Virginia Game 2

Timothy RappJun 23, 2015

Vanderbilt is one win away from a second consecutive College World Series title, and one win away from earning it at the expense of Virginia in the championship round after beating the Cavaliers 5-1 on Monday night.

Don't expect Virginia to start panicking, however.

"We've been in this situation before this year," Cavaliers coach Brian O'Connor told the Associated Press, via ESPN.com. "We were in this situation going into Saturday, that if you win you get to continue your season and if you don't, it's over. This team has handled that kind of adversity all year long, and I would imagine tomorrow night will be no different."

Virginia won't have to deal with Carson Fulmer again, who limited the Cavaliers to two hits while striking out eight over 7.2 innings in Game 1. But the Commodores do have a fairly rested staff, having played only four games in the past 10 days in the College World Series as opposed to Virginia needing an extra game in an elimination matchup against Florida.

And facing Philip Pfeifer (6-4, 3.77 ERA, 112 strikeouts in 90.2 innings) will be no easy task for the Cavaliers. Nor will be facing a staunch bullpen that has given up just one run in the past 23 innings of postseason play. And going up against a lineup that includes top overall pick Dansby Swanson, Bryan Reynolds, Rhett Wiseman and Zander Wiel will be a challenge.

Consider the following stat from ESPN Stats & Information:

Vanderbilt is stacked, folks.

And the Commodores have the most interesting storyline coming into the game, too. A year ago, Pfeifer was a spectator watching Vanderbilt win a national title after head coach Tim Corbin suspended him for failing a drug test. And Corbin's decision was a huge moment in Pfeifer's life, per David Climer of the Tennessean:

"

[Corbin's] message: This isn't about baseball. This is about the rest of your life.

Corbin laid out a list of requirements that Pfeifer had to take care of before he would be allowed to rejoin the Commodores. One by one, Pfeifer worked through them.

It was tough love. But it paid results.

"He saved my life," Pfeifer said of Corbin.

"

Virginia is a good, scrappy team that has stared down deficits before and come out on top, of course. But the Cavaliers haven't done so against a team as talented and deep as Vanderbilt. They haven't done so against a team with the championship experience this Vanderbilt squad possesses—a team with so much future MLB talent.

Virginia has the ability to make a series out of this. But all indications are this Vanderbilt team will win its second consecutive title Tuesday night.
