USA vs. Colombia: Breaking Down the Social Buzz Ahead of Women's World Cup Clash

Brian MarronJun 22, 2015

If Colombia is as active as its mouths are, the team could steal a win when it plays the United States in the Women’s World Cup Monday at 8 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.

The U.S. is heavily favored heading into the match and the team has the best chance to ultimately win the tournament, according to FiveThirtyEight.

The winner Monday will play China in the round of eight. The United States and Colombia both have four total goals in their first three contests, so both teams are looking to ramp things up offensively.

Some Colombian players are claiming the U.S. team does not respect Colombia. Colombia’s Yoreli Rincon said Sunday that her team has more pride and that the Americans will not have their hearts in the game, per ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle.

The animosity originates from a 2012 match where the Colombians claim U.S. players made disrespectful remarks and belittled them, according ESPN’s Graham Hays. The game resulted in Colombia’s Lady Andrade hitting Abby Wambach in the face, giving her a black eye.

Andrade told USA Today Sports Saturday that her team would emerge victorious.

"

"They belittle us. They think we're a team they're going to walk all over and it will be an easy game for them," Andrade said in an interview with USA TODAY Sports before leaning in to whisper her prediction:

"We're going to beat them since they like to talk so much."

"

U.S. players have not taken the bait and made any retaliatory comments regarding Colombia’s claims. Megan Rapinoe did dispute that she and her teammates do not respect Colombia, per Fox Sports.

However, NBC Sports’ Jeff Kassouf feels the trash talking will spark an American team that has not been playing in top form thus far.

Kassouf definitely has a point here. The U.S. looked like it needed a spark, as the team’s play has not been as sharp as anticipated. Look for the Colombian’s comments to motivate the Americans to really play well.

The U.S. also has plenty of experience on its side that Colombia lacks. This match is really the first time Colombia has been in the spotlight while the Americans have arguably the world’s best program since the 1990s. Just look at this staggering statistic, courtesy of ESPN Stats and Information.

Colombia will also be without starting goalkeeper Sandra Sepulveda after she received her second yellow card of the tournament against England. This gives the U.S. a great opportunity to gets its offense on track and find the back of the net.

In the end, the Americans have too much talent and experience for Colombia to handle. Wambach will get redemption and score and the U.S. will win 3-0.
