Stock Watch for Golf's Top Stars After US Open at Chambers Bay
We know Jordan Spieth's stock is up after his U.S. Open victory at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington. And that's no small feat, considering the 21-year-old was already regarded as nearly the best golfer in the world (after Rory McIlroy).
Other stars, of course, didn't fare so well on the Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed course. Chief among them: a certain former No. 1-ranked golfer in the world.
Who's rising? Who's falling? Who to buy? Who to sell?
Read on to find out.
Tiger Woods
1 of 8
Official World Golf Ranking: 205
FedEx Cup Rank: 200
U.S. Open: Missed cut. Tiger Woods produced his worst round in a major with his first-round 80 at Chambers Bay and missed the cut badly. The former world No. 1 carded the sixth-worst score of anyone in the competition.
Stock Watch: Stock down. Sell, sell, sell. How could Woods' stock be anything other than way down after embarrassing himself at Chambers Bay? Woods was supposed to be proving that he'd made strides following a lackluster effort at the Memorial. Instead, he looks as lost as ever.
Phil Mickelson
2 of 8
Official World Golf Ranking: 20
FedEx Cup Rank: 45
U.S. Open: T64. Phil Mickelson started strong at Chambers Bay but faltered over the U.S. Open's final three rounds. Lefty finished at 13 over, 18 strokes off Jordan Spieth's winning score.
Stock Watch: Stock down. Like with Tiger Woods, golf fans seemed to be hoping against hope that Mickelson would have a chance on Sunday at the U.S. Open. Instead, he was an afterthought by Friday. He had disappointing stuff at a venue that seemed suited to his game.
Jordan Spieth
3 of 8
Official World Golf Ranking: 2
FedEx Cup Rank: 1
U.S. Open: Won. Jordan Spieth outlasted Dustin Johnson at Chambers Bay after the latter three-putted the final green from inside 15 feet. The 21-year-old was candid about the fact that he didn't have his best stuff, which makes his resolve and management of the challenging track that much more impressive.
Stock Watch: Stock up. Winning a golf tournament of any variety tends to boost a golfer's stock. Winning a second consecutive major gives a player a huge bump in any discussion of value. Spieth's stock is soaring at the moment.
Dustin Johnson
4 of 8
Official World Golf Ranking: 3
FedEx Cup Rank: 3
U.S. Open: T2. Dustin Johnson came within inches of winning the U.S. Open. He missed an eagle putt to win the tournament outright, then was wide on his comebacker to tie Jordan Spieth. DJ fired weekend rounds of 70 to finish at four under, one stroke in back of Spieth.
Stock Watch: Stock up. It was only a bout of untimely poor putting that doomed Johnson at Chambers Bay. For the week, he played brilliant golf, following an opening 65 with solid play. As such, his stock is certainly up.
Jason Day
5 of 8
Official World Golf Ranking: 8
FedEx Cup Rank: 13
U.S. Open: T9. Over the weekend, Jason Day battled a flare of the vertigo that has plagued him in recent years. He entered the final round tied for the lead but ran out of gas Sunday, posting a four-over 74.
Stock Watch: Stock up. Jason Day cobbled together a quality finish at Chambers Bay while battling a thoroughly destabilizing health issue. Have you ever tried to swing a golf club while dizzy and nauseous enough that it's difficult to stand? His perseverance alone earns Day a "stock up" designation.
Sergio Garcia
6 of 8
Official World Golf Ranking: 9
FedEx Cup Rank: 31
U.S. Open: T18. While he certainly didn't enjoy his time along the Puget Sound, Sergio Garcia didn't play too poorly at Chambers Bay. The Spaniard closed with a final-round 68 to finish at three over for the competition.
Stock Watch: Stock down. The U.S. Open presented us with yet another example of "Sergio being Sergio" when the Artist Formerly Known as El Nino put the USGA on blast via Twitter. Bad form.
Rickie Fowler
7 of 8
Official World Golf Ranking: 10
FedEx Cup Rank: 19
U.S. Open: Missed cut. Rickie Fowler began his U.S. Open with a miserable 11-over 80. He was better on Friday, firing a second-round three-over 73. The poor showing snaps a streak of superb play in golf's major championships.
Stock Watch: Stock down. Expectations were high for Fowler entering this year's U.S. Open, especially after his top-five finish at Pinehurst No. 2 last year. One number is all you need to devalue Fowler's stock: 81.
Adam Scott
8 of 8
Official World Golf Ranking: 11
FedEx Cup Rank: 87
U.S. Open: T4. Adam Scott exploded up the Sunday leaderboard at Chambers Bay thanks to a bogey-free 64. The six-under final round moved the Australian to three under for the tournament, and he finished just two strokes in back of Jordan Spieth.
Stock Watch: Stock up. The putter finally cooperated for Scott, and what do you know, he made a leaderboard move. Stock up for an inspired final round and not mailing it in when out of contention. Real mettle.
