College World Series 2015: Updated Bracket Results and Championship Teams
Bring on the rematch.
For the second year in a row, Vanderbilt will face Virginia with the college baseball national title on the line at the College World Series. Last year, the Commodores won the title after John Norwood's tiebreaking homer in the top of the eighth inning in Game 3 was the difference.
This year, the Cavaliers will be seeking their revenge after knocking off Florida on Saturday night, 5-4, eliminating the team many people considered to be the favorite.
It's been a fascinating season for Virginia. While it came into the tournament last year as the No. 3 seed in the nation, this year, the Cavaliers were a regional No. 3 that barely made their conference tournament. Few folks expected Virginia to make the run it did this year, and that has made this season particularly memorable for coach Brian O'Connor, as he told the Associated Press (via ESPN.com):
"They're all special, certainly, but this one's different. How this team has navigated and what they've been through to get here is really, really special and memorable. They have a lot of pride in playing for each other. They're going to give it everything they've got. They're going to be prepared. And it's been a lot of fun to coach.
"
Vanderbilt certainly won't take Virginia lightly, especially a Cavaliers team that has clearly peaked at the perfect time.
The Commodores will be tough to beat themselves, however. It isn't just the three first-round picks from this year's MLB draft—shortstop Dansby Swanson and pitchers Carson Fulmer and Walker Buehler—that make the Commodores tough. Or their experience. Or the fact that they've proved they can win close games in the clutch.
Well, it's all of those things. But it's also the fact that Vanderbilt's bats finally woke up against TCU, as the team ripped 11 hits in a 7-1 victory. Vanderbilt already had an amazing pitching staff, but if it keeps hitting like it did against TCU, Virginia is going to be in trouble.
David Climer of the Tennessean broke down the team's turnaround:
"After struggling offensively in their first two games in the College World Series, the Commodores banged out 11 hits on Friday night as they moved into the championship series with a 7-1 victory over TCU. Those 11 hits matched Vanderbilt's total in its first two CWS games when it scored a combined five runs against Cal State Fullerton and TCU. The Commodores batted just .177 in those two games.
"
The hope for the Commodores will be that they can carry that momentum at the plate into the championship series. They certainly have plenty of talented players, though getting Swanson back on track will be key. The No. 1 overall pick has just one hit in the College World Series to this point, but if he can find his swing again, the Commodores will be that much tougher.
As if Vanderbilt wasn't tough enough, history isn't exactly on Virginia's side, either, per ESPN Stats & Information:
Sure, what happened in the past has no real bearing on what will transpire in the future. But Vanderbilt has to have confidence knowing it was able to defeat the Cavaliers a year ago, while Virginia certainly has something to prove this time around.
There's nothing quite like a rematch. Expect Vanderbilt vs. Virginia Round II to be one heck of a series.
