US Open Golf 2015 Leaderboard: Live Look at Sunday Scores, Overall Predictions

Nate LoopJun 21, 2015

Moving day at the 2015 U.S. Open saw four players finish out the third round of golf tied atop the leaderboard.

Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Branden Grace and 21-year-old Jordan Spieth all came into Sunday locked up at four under par. While the latter three have spent much of the tournament packed together at or very near the top of the leaderboard, it was Day who crept up to join them Saturday with a score of 68.

The Chambers Bay course has proven to be a beguiling, difficult course for many of the world's best golfers—don't even get Spieth started on that 18th hole—but there are still plenty in contention for golf's second major of the year.

Louis Oosthuizen highlights a pack of players at one under, while the rest of the field is over par coming into the fourth and final round.

Here's a look at the live leaderboard for Sunday.

Overall Predictions

While a three-stroke advantage over the field bodes well for the quartet at the top of the board, PGA Tour notes that the U.S. Open is no stranger to come-from-behind victories:

It wouldn't even necessarily take four collapses for a player outside the top tier to snatch a famous win. Johnson proved on Monday with his 65—tied with Henrik Stenson for the best round of the tournament—that it's possible to put together a dominant 18 holes at Chambers Bay. Several other golfers have managed scores of 66 in University Place, Washington.

Making things difficult for upstart challengers will be the stronger winds on Sunday. Golf Australia notes which holes could prove to be especially tough in these conditions:

Of the four players at the top, Grace is certainly the underdog. He's the No. 40 player in the world—the other three are all in the top 10—and his best result at a major championship was a tied-18th performance at the 2015 Masters.

Still, the 27-year-old South African has had his moments at Chambers Bay, and he's a killer closer on The European Tour:

Most eyes will be on Spieth and Johnson, though, for different reasons. Spieth is golf's current phenom, and he is looking to become the first player since Tiger Woods in 2002 to win both the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year. If he can pull it off in Chambers Bay, the Grand Slam talk will commence.

Johnson is looking for a statement win after voluntarily taking time off to deal with drug and personal issues. Yahoo Sports' Ryan Ballengee notes his power has been key to his performances thus far at Chambers Bay:

"

The combination of prodigious length and a timely spell of accuracy is what has allowed him to thrive here despite a lackluster short game. With his carry off the tee, he can leave himself managable shots into these greens like no one else in contention can. He's playing pool while the other contenders are trying to rig a free game out of this pinball machine of a golf course.

"

Day's performances have been nothing short of remarkable, considering his recent form and health issues. He missed the cut at both the Players Championship and the Memorial Tournament and is dealing with vertigo symptoms. His caddie, Col Swatton, said Day's third-round 68 was "the best round I've ever seen," per ESPN.com's Bob Harig.

It was a gutsy, remarkable performances, but it will be incredibly tough to repeat. Look for Day to fall off on Sunday. Johnson's power advantage will be cut down some by the headwinds, and his short game likely won't be enough to keep him in contention.

Grace is experienced and has proved himself on the European Tour, but look for Spieth's all-around game to carry him to a second major win after Sunday is through.

Prediction: Spieth wins, Grace second, Oosthuizen third
