MLB Team of the Week: Miguel Cabrera, Starling Marte and Carlos Correa Star
With another seven days of baseball action comes another fresh installment of Bleacher Report's MLB Team of the Week. That's how it works, people.
In case you're just joining us: These are the guys (eight position players plus a designated hitter and starting pitcher) who've busted box scores between June 12 and June 18.
(Seriously, we're strict about those dates, so before you cry foul in the comments, make sure you aren't remembering, say, a monster game that happened on June 11. Then feel free to cry foul.)
To qualify, a player needs at least two starts at the position in question or one start in the case of pitchers.
Finally, bonus points are awarded if gaudy stats led to a bump in the standings—because while individual performance is nice, it's even nicer when you're winning.
Catcher: Wilson Ramos, Washington Nationals
1 of 10
In a so-so week for catchers, Wilson Ramos literally powered his way to the head of the pack.
Three of Wilson's six hits left the yard, and he also smacked a double and collected seven RBI.
Yes, two of his long balls came against Tampa Bay Rays infielders Jake Elmore and Nick Franklin, who took the mound in the late innings of a blowout Washington Nationals win on June 16.
Still, they count the same in the box score.
Honorable Mention
Russell Martin (TOR): Russell Martin went 8-for-27 with a double, a triple and a home run for the suddenly soaring Toronto Blue Jays.
First Base: Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers
2 of 10
Miguel Cabrera is still trailing the Kansas City Royals' Eric Hosmer in the latest, ridiculously Royals-heavy round of All-Star voting.
This week, though, Miggy reminded the baseball world why he's No. 1 at the plate.
The Detroit Tigers slugger went 11-for-22 with two doubles, three home runs and 12 RBI, though the Tigers went just 3-3 and are looking up at those ballot-ruling Royals in the American League Central.
Honorable Mention
Paul Goldschmidt (ARI): Paul Goldschmidt rapped out 11 hits in 26 at-bats, including a pair of home runs, as the Arizona Diamondbacks slithered into third place in the NL West with a 5-2 week.
Second Base: Dee Gordon, Miami Marlins
3 of 10
Dee Gordon has cooled off after a torrid start, just as the BABIP-citing doubters said he would.
This week, the speedy Miami Marlins infielder got back to his hot-hitting ways, churning out 11 hits, including a triple, and swiping two bases.
It should be noted that he gave us one of the week's biggest head-scratchers on Wednesday, when he lowered his bat in apparent resignation before New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda delivered a 2-2 pitch and watched it sail by for strike three.
Here's Gordon's explanation, per Fox Sports, which does exactly nothing to clear up the confusion:
"I just wanted to see if he was going to throw it for a strike 'cause I didn't think he would, and he did. So, it's part of it."
Honorable Mention
Ben Zobrist (OAK): Ben Zobrist went 9-for-23 with three doubles, a triple, a home run and 10 runs scored, and most importantly, he upped his potential trade value for the last-place Oakland A's.
Third Base: Josh Harrison, Pittsburgh Pirates
4 of 10
The Pittsburgh Pirates enjoyed an unsullied 7-0 week and have won eight straight overall to claim second place in the NL Central.
Give a share of the credit to Josh Harrison, who went 15-for-31 with two doubles, three stolen bases and four RBI, including a walk-off knock on Monday.
Honorable Mention
Manny Machado (BAL): Manny Machado could have easily earned the top spot here with eight RBI and 11 hits, including four home runs, for the Baltimore Orioles, who went 5-2.
Shortstop: Carlos Correa, Houston Astros
5 of 10
Welcome to the big leagues, Carlos Correa. In a year defined by high-profile call-ups (Kris Bryant, Noah Syndergaard, Byron Buxton) Correa has made possibly the biggest instant splash.
After a June 8 summons, the former top pick smacked two home runs among 11 hits this week. And on Thursday, he snagged a piece of history by stealing three bags in a single game against the Colorado Rockies, becoming the second-youngest rookie to accomplish that feat this century, bested only by the great Rickey Henderson, per MLB.com's Brian McTaggart.
FanGraphs' Jeff Sullivan broke down the exceptional play of Correa:
"We don't know what rookie Carlos Correa is going to be. Lots of baseball left to go; lots of adjustments left to be made. This much could be said, though: if a 20-year-old rookie were to become a standout immediately, he might do things like Correa has done. It would be difficult to imagine a more promising start...
"
Honorable Mention
J.J. Hardy (BAL): J.J. Hardy went 11-for-27 with two doubles and four RBI for the O's, who fluttered over .500 and into the thick of the AL East race.
Left Field: Starling Marte, Pittsburgh Pirates
6 of 10
Another Pirates player cracks the Team of the Week, which is no surprise, considering their winning streak.
Starling Marte certainly earned it with an incredible 17 hits in 34 at-bats, good for a cool .500 average.
He exited Wednesday's game with an ankle issue, but he was back in the lineup Thursday and went 2-for-5, which is in-arr-guably good news for the Bucs. (Sorry.)
Honorable Mention
Kevin Pillar (TOR): Kevin Pillar cracked 12 hits in 28 at-bats with a home run and five RBI. Not bad for a guy who was hitting .217 as recently as May 27.
Center Field: Lorenzo Cain, Kansas City Royals
7 of 10
Lorenzo Cain may be part of Kansas City's ludicrous Midsummer Classic uprising, but this week, he looked every bit an All-Star.
Cain went 9-for-23 with a triple, two doubles, two home runs and six RBI. And the Royals, grumbling aside, stayed atop the AL Central with a 4-2 mark.
Honorable Mention
Mookie Betts (BOS): The Sox keep spinning in the AL East cellar, but Mookie Betts chipped in with a home run, a triple and two doubles among his 10 hits.
Right Field: George Springer, Houston Astros
8 of 10
A 13-for-30 showing with two home runs and five RBI earns George Springer a nod, as does the Astros' ongoing AL dominance.
"I think more impressive is just the overall game that George is bringing," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said, per Jose de Jesus Ortiz of Chron.com. "I think he's contributing in every facet."
Honorable Mention
Giancarlo Stanton (MIA): Giancarlo Stanton hit three more home runs to bring his MLB-leading total to 25, while cracking 10 hits in 24 at-bats to boot.
Designated Hitter: David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox
9 of 10
The cellar-dwelling Boston Red Sox wasted a good week from David Ortiz, who turned back the clock with two home runs, seven RBI and a 1.100 OPS.
And in case any Boston fans were worrying about Big Papi being shipped out of Beantown, Ortiz told Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe he'll exercise his right to block any deal.
"No chance," Ortiz said, per Cafardo. "This is the team I'll be with the rest of my career."
Honorable Mention
Alex Rodriguez (NYY): The lurching Alex Rodriguez milestone train rolls on, as the polarizing Yankees DH clubbed a home run and picked up five RBI, bringing himself within one hit of the vaunted 3,000 hit club.
Pitcher: C.J. Wilson, Los Angeles Angels
10 of 10
C.J. Wilson provided exactly the spark the Los Angeles Angels have been searching for, allowing just one earned run in 15 innings with 17 strikeouts and three walks.
Los Angeles went 4-3 and remain out of the money in the AL West, but more of the same from Wilson could sling the Halos back into the hunt.
Honorable Mention
David Price (DET): Do 14 strikeouts in 14 innings with two earned runs mean anything to you?
