US Open Tee Times 2015: Pairings and Predictions for Friday Schedule

Joe PantornoJun 18, 2015

One round is in the books at Chambers Bay for the 2015 U.S. Open. An intriguing tournament that holds plenty of storylines will make for a pulsating event.

World No. 1 Rory McIlroy will look to maintain his stronghold on the golfing world, while Tiger Woods searches for some consistency that made him one of the greatest golfers in the history of the game.

Those two and the field are chasing Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson, who each posted a five-under in the first round.

Chambers Bay has not been a favorite of some of the top golfers in the field. With the course looking to be fast and rather treacherous, with what Tiger Woods told ESPN's Bob Harig are "too long or too steep" holes, the U.S. Open will have to be approached differently this year.

Phil Mickelson explained to Harig that this course might as well be on a different continent.

"

Historically it's not like a normal U.S. Open. It's everything like a British Open. The exact same grasses. I've never seen this type of fescue in the United States. I've never seen greens with fescue grass in the United States. It plays exactly like the British Open plays. The ball runs like the British, you're hitting the same shots as the British, and so it's like a British Open in the U.S.

"

It's not an awful sentence for Mickelson to play at Chambers Bay. He won a British Open in 2013 at Muirfield. But in 21 British Opens, he has placed in the top 10 just three times.

Mickelson fared well in his first round, shooting a one-under 69.

It seemed Johnson and Stenson enjoyed Chambers Bay the most after the first round with a five-under 65.

Johnson birdied six holes and should have had an eagle after a brilliant tee shot on the 12th hole put him within 15 feet of the hole. While his putting game was spot on for a majority of the day, he missed his eagle chance. BreatheSport found Johnson's start to be rather impressive given the course.

A bogey on the ninth dropped him to five under.

Stenson surged toward the end of his first round, birdying four of his final five holes to overcome two bogeys on hole Nos. 6 and 8.

The fast greens were right up the leaders' alleys, and they took full advantage of it. Johnson putted 28 times, while Stenson attempted 27. Stenson was a fan of Chambers Bay, as he told Rex Hoggard of the Golf Channel.

If the two leaders can navigate the greens as well as they did Thursday, they will make this tournament a two-horse race quickly.

The best golfer in the world, Rory McIlroy, was having some trouble with Chambers Bay, posting a two-over on the day. He is tied for 85th. After starting on the 10th, McIlroy bogeyed two straight holes on Nos. 14 and 15 after birdying 11.

Ending the day with two bogeys on his last three holes has given the 2011 winner a big hole to climb out of. If he wants any shot of making a run, his putting will have to get better. Of the field average of 1.82 putts per hole, McIlroy was at 1.89 in the first round.

Patrick Reed is right on Johnson and Stenson's heels at four under.

Tiger Woods had himself a rough day, to say the least. And the New York Times' Bruce Feldman described it best.

Woods shot 10 over, and his pairing partner, Rickie Fowler, was 11 over. They'll need big days to stay in this tournament, which seems very unlikely.
