Solow Races to Victory in Opener

The French-trained Solow made good on his tag as pre-race favourite, racing to a comprehensive win in the Queen Anne Stakes.
Ahead of the Ascot curtain-raiser, a major tussle was expected between Solow and Able Friend. But the latter, a Hong Kong champion, never looked comfortable in the buildup to the race and wasn't in the picture for victory here.

His troubles allowed Solow to capitalise brilliantly. Freddy Head, who trains the favourite at his Chantilly stables, was full of praise for the Queen Anne Stakes winner, per Tom Peacock of the Daily Telegraph:
"He’s a beautiful horse, he’s the number one. I was a bit worried as thought the pace was a bit slow early on. For a moment he looked caught for speed but at the end he strode out.
I want him to last so we’re not going to run in every race that comes. We want to run him for two more years. We'll see - he could maybe go for the Sussex Stakes (at Goodwood next month).
"
He didn’t have things all his own way, though. Jockey Maxime Guyon had to steer Solow to the front of a convoluted battle, eventually holding off the charge of Esoterique in the final stages after surging past Night Of Thunder.

For the punters in attendance, it was the perfect way to start the day. As noted by Peacock’s piece, Solow went off as an 11-8 favourite, and anyone backing the well-fancied horses on Day 1 will have been delighted to see Guyon negotiate the last furlong with a swagger.
Gleneagles Shows His Class

Gleneagles was an emphatic victor in the St. James’ Palace Stakes, confirming his status as the best one-mile racer around. For trainer Aidan O’Brien, this victory represents a record seventh win in this prestigious race.
In a five-horse field, the 8-15 favourite eased to victory with Moore aboard, leaving second-place Latharnach trailing by two and a half lengths. With Frankie Dettori in the saddle, Consort made some strong early running but faded in the face of some late pressure from the eventual winner.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had a miler as good as Gleneagles,” said O’Brien in the aftermath of the triumph, per Channel 4 Racing. “For me, Gleneagles is very like Giant's Causeway but this horse has more speed.”

It was speed that was on show in earnest in the final furlong of this victory. Consort had actually built up a sizeable lead after a blistering beginning to the race, and rounding the turn, he had circa three lengths on Gleneagles.
But Moore didn’t panic and showed exactly why he’s one of the finest riders around with a measured display. Gleneagles upped the ante brilliantly, reeling in Dettori’s ride swiftly before bounding clear of the rest of the field.
Goldream Springs Surprise in King’s Stand

Sole Power failed to feature in the shakeup for the King’s Stand Stakes, as 20-1 shot Goldream edged out fellow outsider Medicean Man to take the Group 1 showpiece.
After winning this race in the previous two Ascot meetings, much was expected of Sole Power as he looked to complete a remarkable treble. But he was unable to live with a strong early pace and, despite a powerful finish, could only muster an underwhelming fifth place.

It paved the way for Goldream to seize the initiative in the latter stages, but as we can see courtesy of Channel 4 Racing, it was a thrilling photo finish.
Trainer Robert Cowell admitted that this win was unexpected, per SportingLife.com: "He's been brilliant. I must say I didn't think he'd win a race like this, but I thought he was getting to that sort of level. It was a brilliant ride, I'm so pleased for the owners who have stuck with this horse, we decided to raise the bar and they told me to do what I want."

Event though this was a very narrow margin of victory to Medicean Man—who was a 50-1 shot himself—with Martin Harley on board, Goldream commanded an authority in the final furlong of this competitive chase.
Indeed, Take Cover seemed poised to run away with this one for long spells after leading out well. But Harley was able to scythe through the field brilliantly in the dying embers, helping the six-year-old make good on the longstanding potential he’s previously showcased.
