Danzig Moon Euthanized After Breaking Leg in Queen's Plate Trial Race
Danzig Moon, who finished fifth and sixth respectively in this year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, was euthanized Sunday in the Queen's Plate Trial at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.
The Courier-Journal's Jonathan Lintner reported the news, indicating that Danzig Moon was involved in a collision with a horse named R U Watchingbud. A compound fracture to Danzig Moon's right rear leg required euthanasia.
"The injury consisted of a compound fracture and the horse was humanely euthanized," said Dr. Greg Taylor, the veterinarian at Woodbine, per BloodHorse.com's Jeremy Balan. "The horse will go for a (necropsy) at (Equine Guelph Hospital) this afternoon."
Jockey Julien Leparoux and assistant trainer Norman Casse reacted to the tragedy on Twitter:
R U Watchingbud wasn't seriously injured in the collision. The riders involved in the Queen's Plate Trial collision are believed to be OK, per Daily Racing Form's Ron Gierkink.
Although Danzig Moon wasn't in the running to win at Churchill Downs, his trip was nevertheless impressive relative to a Triple Crown field. In Sunday's race, Danzig Moon was a 2-1 bet to win for the second time in eight career starts, according to Lintner.
