Overview
West Indies took an absolute hammering in the first Test against Australia. Not only did they lose by nine wickets, they lost inside three days. A dismal first-innings effort looked like it might be swept under the carpet with the bowlers getting stuck into Australia, but Adam Voges and the Australian tail had other plans.
Almost 100 runs came from the lower Aussie order as the Windies struggled to find ways to dismiss the debutant Voges.
Their second innings wasn't much better, although Marlon Samuels and rookie Shane Dowrich did manage a half-century each, but after the fight they showed against England just a few weeks ago, the result against Australia will sting.
They will have to do something really special in order to get a result in Jamaica, considering they have not beaten Australia in a Test for almost a decade.
It’s not that the West Indies lack talent—they have shown some remarkable improvements in the last few months—it’s just that they completely lack the application to get over the line when the going gets tough, especially when it’s least expected. Australia’s tail managed to get them out of a potential hole in the first Test, but these are the kinds of challenges good Test teams have to face all the time.
Poor decision-making, particularly from the senior players, has proved costly for the West Indies on countless occasions. Samuels' dismissal in the second innings against Australia was the perfect example of that, and skipper Denesh Ramdin was quick to acknowledge it. He was quoted by ESPNCricinfo as saying:
"When we're in positions of strength we need to carry that on. That partnership with Marlon and young Dowrich, they could have taken it to probably 200-plus. It has been a very difficult pitch to start, but guys who got starts went on. Adam Voges got a start and made a big hundred for his team.
"
With the two extra days they had to take stock of how much they let themselves down, their fans will be hoping that something registered.
Key Players
West Indies
Devendra Bishoo had some delightful moments in the first Test, evoking memories of Shane Warne with his mesmerising legspin. Six wickets in the first innings would have done Bishoo's confidence the world of good, and with pitches in the Caribbean much lower and slower these days, there should be enough for him to exploit.
Australia
Mitchell Starc is simply out of this world, and it doesn't matter what conditions he is playing in, Starc manages to get it right every single time. His six-wicket haul in the first Test would have been a confidence boost, especially on a track that assisted the spinners more than the quicks.
