In October 2014, Judge Thokozile Masipa sentenced the South African Paralympic runner to five years in prison on a culpable homicide charge after he shot and killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day in 2013. Pistorius had claimed he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder.
He was also sentenced to a concurrent jail term of three years for firing a gun inside a restaurant, but as reported by Eyewitness News, he was not found guilty of murder.

"He's behaving himself very well," Zach Modise, acting national commissioner of correctional services, told the Associated Press. "He hasn't given us any problems."

Barry Bateman of Eyewitness News confirmed the state's appeal against Pistorius' murder acquittal will take place in November.
Judge Masipa was given police protection in South Africa after her decision to clear Pistorius of premeditated murder, as reported by Simon Tomlinson of the MailOnline. According to the report, the sentencing was a discretionary act that "many legal analysts agreed with."
However, some believe a "lesser murder charge" may have been warranted because Pistorius consciously fired his weapon at what he believed to be an intruder behind the door in his bathroom.
Pistorius, who is forced to use two prosthetic legs, was a figure of triumph during the 2012 London Olympics, and he won two gold medals in the 2012 London Paralympics.
