Some wondered if American Pharoah would fall victim to fatigue having run three massive races in a little over a month. In addition, Belmont Park is the longest of the three Triple Crown races. On so many occasions, a Triple Crown contender has started the Belmont Stakes brilliantly but faded down the stretch.
That wasn't the case at all with American Pharoah.
He led for the entirety of the race, getting stronger the longer he ran. Coming around the final turn, the Belmont Stakes was clearly American Pharoah's race to lose, and he didn't disappoint.
Belmont Park wasted little time adding American Pharoah to the hallowed list of Triple Crown winners, per NBC Sports:
All of the years of close calls conditioned fans to expect the worst and hope for the best when it came to the Triple Crown.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the race was how little American Pharoah was challenged. You kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and another horse to surge up the track and take the lead. Instead, American Pharoah didn't lose his ground and maintained a healthy gap on the rest of the field.
According to ESPN Stats and Info, each one of the last five Triple Crown winners boasted a wire-to-wire win at Belmont:
MLB Network's Dan Plesac argued that any calls to alter the Triple Crown format to make it easier for horses were put to rest Saturday. The format helps to weed out the truly great horses from the simply very good ones:
The big question now is how American Pharoah's Triple Crown will impact horse racing in general. Dan Wolken of USA Today wrote earlier in the week that it's likely unrealistic to expect the sport to see any sort of major long-term impact should American Pharoah win the Belmont Stakes.
For nearly four decades, the pursuit of the Triple Crown has been the biggest draw for horse racing. Now that it's happened again, can that same interest carry over for next year?
For now, everybody can bask in American Pharoah's greatness.
