Belmont Stakes 2015 Horses: Full Lineup, Favorites and Sleepers for 147th Race
This year's Belmont Stakes gives us yet another opportunity to watch a colt take a swing at completing one of the greatest feats in sports. Not since 1978 have we seen a horse complete a sweep of racing's Triple Crown, but American Pharoah will look to rewrite that narrative with a win in this year's Belmont Stakes.
For jockey Victor Espinoza, it's his second attempt at a Triple Crown in as many years, as he piloted California Chrome to a fourth-place finish in last year's Belmont after winning both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Meanwhile Pharoah's trainer, Bob Baffert, is taking his fourth Derby-Preakness double to the Belmont—he was unsuccessful with Silver Charm in 1997, Real Quiet in 1998 and War Emblem in 2002.
Despite the fact that the narrative and attention are constantly revolving around American Pharoah, there are other tough horses running, and this year, seven other thoroughbreds will be looking to spoil AP's attempt to complete the sweep.
How likely is it that AP captures the final jewel of the Triple Crown this Saturday at Belmont Park? Well, that's what I'm going to help you figure out. In the sections below, I've outlined the biggest players to know in this year's race, along with a brief look at the field, including post positions, connections and odds.

Favorites
American Pharoah (3-2), Frosted (6-1) and Materiality (13-2) are the favorites to watch Saturday. The three colts each have their own impressive resumes, but Frosted and Materiality are clearly chasing Pharoah, here.
AP is the runaway favorite in this year's Belmont, and if his most recent workouts are any indication, the Pioneerof The Nile colt should be a well-deserving favorite come post time.
Behind him are two strong colts, Materiality, and the potential giant killer, Frosted.
Frosted has been working up a storm at Belmont the last two weeks. The Tapit colt logged a bullet in his May 15 workout, running the best four-furlong time (47.64 seconds) out of 31 horses at the distance that day. Following that strong effort, the Kiaran McLaughlin trainee put up solid times in five- and four-furlong workouts on May 22 and May 29, respectively, per Equibase.com.
Frosted is working well, and his trainer, McLaughlin, seems to turn everything he touches into gold at Belmont Park. The veteran trainer currently ranks fifth in earnings in Belmont's summer meet and owns a ridiculous 62 percent in-the-money percentage in 29 starts, per Equibase.com.
Ask him, though (Ron Mitchell of the Blood-Horse did), and his colt is going to need a superhuman effort to beat Pharoah in the Belmont:
"We have to have an 'A-plus' day and he has to have a 'B' day. But it's a mile-and-a-half, it's a different race over a different track and we're here. We're as close to the paddock as you can get. So it's nice just to walk through the tunnel and be at the paddock.
"
That's not to say that Frosted can't beat Pharoah, though. It's just going to be extremely difficult.
Materiality is the next biggest threat to AP. The Florida Derby winner finished with good burst in the Kentucky Derby, despite having received nearly every bit of bad luck possible. The Afleet Alex colt finished strong to log a distant sixth-place finish in the Derby, but he has rebounded well according to his work tab.
In three workouts since moving to Belmont Park, Materiality ranked fifth, fourth and fourth in his May 16, May 22 and May 29 workouts, respectively, per Equibase.com. Those workouts came at four, five and four furlongs, respectively, and it looks as though the young colt is rounding into form at just the right time.
Materiality's trainer, Todd Pletcher, is about the closest thing there is to a god at Belmont Park. The 47-year-old superstar trainer ranks second in earnings for the current Belmont meet and led both the 2013 and 2014 summer meets in earnings as well, per Equibase.com.
In short, this colt will be ready to go Saturday.
Sleepers
Madefromlucky (16-1) is the second half of Pletcher's dynamic duo. The Lookin' At Lucky colt has at least shown that he can run in the company of Pharoah in the past, running fourth and second to AP in the Arkansas Derby and Rebel Stakes, respectively.
One thing Madefromlucky has that the rest of these colts don't, though, is a win over the surface.
Opting to skip both the Derby and the Preakness, Pletcher and owner Mac Nichol chose instead to trend toward the Grade 2 Peter Pan (shown below), run at 1 1/8 miles over the Belmont dirt track.
His rider for the Belmont, Javier Castellano, saddled up in the Peter Pan as well, and the duo worked out a one-length victory over Belmont dropout Conquest Curlinate, en route to a finishing time (1:48.36) that earned him an Equibase speed figure of 106. That 106 mark happens to be a point higher than Tonalist's mark of 105 in last year's Peter Pan.
Tonalist jogged in the 2014 Peter Pan and then went on to play spoiler to California Chrome's attempt to capture the ever-elusive third jewel of racing's Triple Crown. The thought here is that Madefromlucky could do the same.
