Golden Horn Heads Strong Field
The Derby favourite was almost not entered for Saturday's race, as owner Anthony Oppenheimer had concerns over whether his horse could stay the trip at Epsom, per the Racing Post's Peter Scargill.
However, there is clearly some confidence in Golden Horn now, with Oppenheimer having stumped up the large late-entry fee to ensure his horse ran, per BBC Sport's Cornelius Lysaght:
As Lysaght noted, the John Gosden-trained colt is the standout contender for the 2015 Derby, not least because of his impressive performance at York's Dante.
As can be seen below, Golden Horn was a convincing winner in May, seeing off the challenge of Derby contenders Jack Hobbs and Elm Park:
Dettori will surely give Golden Horn quite a ride. He has some serious pedigree and has won the Derby once before, aboard Authorized in 2007, per GB Racing:
Dettori is clearly desperate to have another winner in the famous race, and he believes he has a real chance, per the Guardian's Greg Wood: "There’s going to be some sleepless nights. It reminds me of the days when Authorized was hot favourite for the Derby. He’s a worthy favourite."
However, the 236th running of the Derby is not going to be plain sailing for Golden Horn, who faces a strong field despite the withdrawal of Aidan O'Brien's 2,000 Guineas winner Gleneagles.
O'Brien still has three horses running: Giovanni Canaletto, Hans Holbein and Kilimanjaro. The first of those is his most likely winner with many punters taking the plunge, especially with Ryan Moore on board, per Oddschecker:
Perhaps Golden Horn's biggest challenge, though, will come from stablemate Jack Hobbs, set to be jockeyed by William Buick.
Jack Hobbs went off favourite in the Dante, and although he failed to come through and win at York, he looks as though he can confidently make the step up to the Derby distance.
If, as has previously been suspected, Golden Horn does not have the stamina to last at Epsom, Jack Hobbs could very well be the one to snatch one of the biggest crowns in racing.
Indeed, Dettori himself is aware of the challenge, per the Racing Post:
The Derby is always a magnificent occasion, and the prestige gained by the winner is unmatched. Golden Horn leads the field, but he is far from a guaranteed victor.
