Bayern Munich's 2014/15 End-of-Season Awards
The champagne corks have been popped, the cheers have quietened and Munich's Marienplatz has finally returned to some sense of normality. Bayern Munich have finished their season, and the celebrations look to have finally come to an end.
Before we dive head first into a summer of transfer speculation and pre-season fixtures, we have to acknowledge the season that came before—just who did what and to whom awards should be handed out.
What follows are the Bayern Munich end-of-season awards.
Best Player
1 of 8
Bayern have a squad full of fantastic players, each with the ability to dominate or sway a match in their favour with the simple flick of their foot. Yet among the array of stars has been one player who stood out above all others: Arjen Robben.
Although Robben has missed the last eight games of the Bundesliga season, he still remains the only real option for the Player of the Year award among Bayern fans.
With 19 goals and nine assists in just 30 games for the club this season, according to Transfermarkt, Robben at times dragged Bayern from win to win in the club's quest for silverware.
Best Signing
2 of 8
Although Xabi Alonso and Robert Lewandowski were exceptional for Bayern for large parts of the season, no new signing was as consistently brilliant for Guardiola's team as Juan Bernat.
Stepping in for the injured David Alaba, Bernat strolled into the team and looked like a player who has been playing for the club since he was a child. A truly outstanding left-back who has gone from strength to strength in Munich this year.
Best Goal
3 of 8Need we explain this exquisite goal from Robert Lewandowski against Eintracht Frankfurt in April?
Worst Signing
4 of 8
Mehdi Benatia hasn't exactly been a bad signing—he just hasn't been altogether that good.
The Morocco international has perhaps played a par season for Bayern this season, but having signed for such an extortionate amount of money from Roma in the summer, that isn't exactly good enough.
The manner in which fellow arrivals Alonso, Lewandowski, Bernat and Sebastian Rode thrived hasn't helped his case, either.
Best Individual Performance
5 of 8
With little surprise, the best individual performance of this season came courtesy of Robben, who single-handedly took to the task of dismantling lowly Paderborn on one fateful night in February.
Bayern won the game by six goals to nil, and the Dutchman scored two and assisted two others.
The winger's touch to play in Lewandowski for the first goal was quite exceptional. His poacher's goal to round off the scoring in the 86th minute wasn't too bad, either.
Most Improved Player
6 of 8
Although Bayern spent a lot of money in the summer to bolster an already bustling squad of talent, it was humble right-back Rafinha who perhaps made the biggest impact compared to his former performances for the club.
The Brazil international has, until very recently, been no more than a back-up defender, but under Guardiola the 29-year-old has gained a new lease of life. He's obviously not the best player in the world—or even in Bayern's back line for that matter, but he's someone who made a real effort this season and looked twice the player he once was in Munich.
Biggest Disappointment
7 of 8
There have been a few bumps in the road for Bayern during the Bundesliga campaign and there was of course that semi-final defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal, but for may fans, the biggest disappointment of this season will be the first-leg defeat to Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
The club had high hopes of challenging for a European Cup under Guardiola, yet when the Bavarian giants came up against their manager's former side, it didn't exactly go to plan. In fact, it was a disaster.
The manner in which Barca were able to put the tie beyond doubt over the course of the 90 minutes that night not only knocked Bayern out of the tournament but also planted a lot of doubt in the side. The ramifications of the 3-0 loss will surely be felt throughout this summer's transfer window.
Best Team Performance
8 of 8
Alternatively, the best performance we saw from Bayern this season probably came in the round of 16 of the Champions League, when Guardiola's side thumped Shakhtar Donetsk 7-0 at the Allianz Arena.
A tricky and somewhat worrying 0-0 draw in Ukraine had left a number of question marks over this side's ability to challenge for the trophy this season—doubts that would be proved warranted later in the competition—but the German champions responded perfectly with a resounding home win in the second leg.
It was a game in which everyone simply played their best. Goals from Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, Franck Ribery and even Mario Gotze were complemented perfectly by a complete defensive shutout. An ideal result that best summed up of what Bayern were capable.
