Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on David De Gea and Hugo Lloris Rumours

Nick AkermanJun 1, 2015

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has fuelled rumours of a move to Real Madrid by playing it coy when asked about his future.

The Spanish stopper spoke during a ceremony that saw him become an adopted son of Castilla-La Mancha, reported by Manu Sainz of AS. He decided to play it cool, saying: "We'll see what happens with my future. ... Now I am on holiday and I am very happy for this recognition," per Sainz's report.

This quote does nothing to help United boss Louis van Gaal, who recently suggested De Gea has the power to determine his own path, reported by the BBC (h/t Richard Jolly of ESPN FC): "I cannot say when [De Gea's future] will be resolved. He has to say something."

Perhaps ominously for United, Sainz suggests the 24-year-old's mind is already made up: "De Gea does not want to say it, but at Madrid they already know that the goalkeeper wants to occupy the position in the Bernabeu goal from next season."

However, Jamie Anderson of the Daily Star believes incoming Madrid boss Rafa Benitez is keen to lure Bayern Munich stopper Pepe Reina to the Spanish capital. Reina enjoyed a terrific spell with Liverpool under Benitez's tutelage and could offer Iker Casillas quality back-up, particularly when you consider Keylor Navas is also at Madrid.

Anderson believes Benitez would rather move for De Gea when his contract expires in 2016, taking him from Old Trafford on a free transfer. Sainz suggests United "would prefer" the stopper to see out his current deal and exit for nothing than see him leave this summer. Anderson reports that the Red Devils "look set" to keep De Gea for "one more season" with the Reina-to-Madrid story in mind.

Chisanga Malata of the Daily Star links Tottenham Hotspur No. 1 Hugo Lloris to United as De Gea's potential replacement.

However, he reports comments from Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, who believes the Frenchman will remain at White Hart Lane next season: "There have been a lot of rumours, but Hugo wants to stay with us and we are happy with him too," said Pochettino. "He is happy and everything else is just rumour."

Van Gaal will no doubt be planning for life without De Gea, a process that began with the January arrival of Victor Valdes. The former Barca 'keeper made a handful of world-class saves during his full United debut against Hull City, but he also showed his limitations when under pressure from crosses.

A combination of Valdes and Anders Lindegaard is unlikely to be enough for United to sustain success next season, particularly as the club has become used to De Gea's heroics saving points.

Supporters may hope improvements across the rest of the team can make up for De Gea's potential exit. B/R UK's Thom Gibbs recently discussed a number of transfer rumours surrounding United:

Whether De Gea stays or goes, Van Gaal and United have a huge summer ahead of them. With Champions League football secure, it's pivotal the club possesses the strength in depth needed to compete across all fronts. This is a major task, considering the side's poor Capital One Cup and FA Cup showings during the 2014-15 season.

De Gea's decision not to commit is only pointing toward him eventually heading back to Spain. He's obviously keeping his options open, but at this point, it would be overly optimistic for United fans to suspect he'll remain at the club for much longer.
