This year's Women's College World Series truly is a clash of titans.
Florida is the defending champion, and the program has reached the championship series four times since 2009. Michigan comes into the series having won a whopping 28 straight games.
Graham Hays of espnW noted, "These are teams without weaknesses."
He added, "Florida can beat you with its defense, its patience, its power, its speed or its pitching. If there are teams that do one of those things better, there aren't many who can make a case they for all of them as well. In fact, there may be only the one waiting Monday."
Indeed, the Florida defense is something to see. Center fielder Kirsti Merritt alone saved two runs against Auburn on Sunday, gunning down two runners at the plate. Florida simply doesn't give any runs away.
And indeed, Michigan is probably the only team in college softball this year that can hang with the Gators and potentially even beat them. Lindsay Montemarano and the Wolverines certainly aren't happy just reaching the championship series, per Michigan Softball on Twitter:
Of course, both teams are loaded with star power. Lauren Haeger has been dominant pitching for Florida this season and has especially shined at this year's tournament. Michigan counters with the pitching of Megan Betsa and Haylie Wagner and the bats of Sierra Romero and Sierra Lawrence.
NCAA Softball provided the highlights from each team's victory on Sunday via Twitter:
Truly, this is a matchup of giants. Do you pick Florida, which has consistently been the best team in the nation and has the experience of winning the title a year ago, along with a great defense, timely hitting and Haeger?
Or do you go with the red-hot Wolverines?
Game 1 is obviously huge, as neither team wants to face a win-or-go-home scenario in Game 2. Look for Florida's experience to help them edge out a close, enthralling, 3-2 victory.
