College Softball World Series 2015: Sunday Results, Highlights, Twitter Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldMay 31, 2015

The 2015 Women's College World Series determined its two national championship participants after Sunday's action.

First it was the Florida Gators advancing to the grand finale with a walk-off 3-2 victory over SEC rival Auburn in a dramatic nine-inning thriller. Michigan then thwarted LSU's bid for an all-SEC title series by defeating the Tigers 6-3.

Florida has the chance to become the first team since Arizona in 2006 and 2007 to repeat as national champion. It took some serious resilience to fend off Auburn, though, including in the top of the second inning, when the Gators saw their foe load the bases with just one out.

But a brilliant throw by center fielder Kirsti Merritt allowed Florida to escape the inning unscathed, per NCAA Softball:

When right fielder Branndi Melero singled in two runs to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead, it was on Florida to come through in the clutch yet again. That happened in the form of Taylore Fuller's 14th home run, a solo shot to even the score at two apiece in the bottom of the fourth.

Aside from that offering, Auburn pitcher Lexi Davis put forth a gritty, stellar performance. She managed to get through 7.1 innings with only two earned runs allowed against the Gators' strong lineup despite walking eight.

The score remained knotted until freshman Florida left fielder Nicole DeWitt plated Justine McLean—who scored the first run in the third on a passed ball—on an RBI single to win it.

Check out the footage of DeWitt's winning hit, courtesy of the Gators' official YouTube channel:

"I was just trying to keep it simple," said DeWitt afterward, per GatorZone.com's Chris Harry. "I'd had a rough couple of previous at-bats."

Davis' counterpart, Lauren Haeger, went the full nine innings for Florida to get the win. Pat Dooley of GatorSports.com noted just how much endurance Haeger showed in a must-win situation:

As for the second national semifinal showdown of the day, Michigan now has the chance to add to its lone NCAA softball title from 2005 after handling LSU admirably.

The Wolverines overcame multiple deficits to get the job done. Once the Tigers took a 1-0 lead, shortstop Sierra Romero brought Michigan back with an equalizing home run:

LSU roared back to take the lead on Bailey Landry's two-run double in the top of the fourth, making the score 3-1—only to lose that lead in the bottom half of the inning. This created a compelling close to the game as the final few innings approached.

What was a seesaw type of affair suddenly went all the Wolverines' way, courtesy of Sierra Lawrence's single that wound up driving in the game-winning runs:

Then Michigan relied on a combination of tactical brilliance and speed to pad the lead late:

ASA and USA Softball logged the reaction of ecstatic Wolverines fans:

Although the Gators will be a formidable foe for the Wolverines to negotiate, this year's best-of-three championship series is going to be epic. Tim Brando of Fox Sports is among those excited for the marquee matchup:

Michigan has won 28 consecutive games, so Florida will have all it can handle against the hottest team in the country.

But the Gators hadn't trailed for the entire Women's College World Series until Sunday, per SECSports.com. It's not as though they aren't in championship form at the moment.

Monday's opening game will be the tone-setting contest. It's unfortunate that the Gators had to use Haeger so heavily for 160 pitches to get past Auburn, and it could hurt the team as it tries to guard the national title. Haeger will be pitching on short rest and with plenty of wear and tear when she faces Michigan.
