Ohio State Football Recruiting Offers of the Week

David RegimbalMay 31, 2015

Ohio State has really focused on its 2017 recruiting class recently, and that process continued last week when Urban Meyer and the coaching staff offered a trio of soon-to-be junior prospects.

The Buckeyes' '17 class is off to an incredibly fast start. Meyer already has commitments from a pair of 5-star and four 4-star commits, which has Ohio State at the top of the 2017 recruiting rankings

And with the offers sent out last week, it's clear that the Buckeyes are trying to stay at the top.

AJ Epenesa, 5-Star Defensive End (2017)

The most notable offer of the week went out to AJ Epenesa, a 5-star defensive end out of Edwardsville, Illinois.

The 6'5", 230-pound pass-rusher is rated the No. 2 player overall for the 2017 class and already boasts offers from Florida State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Tennessee, USC and 15 others. The Buckeyes joined that group on Thursday, but they, along with everyone else, trail Iowa and Notre Dame for his services, according to 247Sports' Crystal Ball.

But Epenesa isn't anywhere near a commitment and is waiting until September to let his recruitment open up, according to David Kvidahl of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Until then, his offer list will continue to grow, but as the reigning national champions, Ohio State will certainly stand out.

Epenesa has the frame to put on a lot more weight, which is why he projects to strong-side defensive end, but he's already an incredible force in run defense. He has no problem taking on double-teams or navigating through blocking schemes to attack the ball-carrier, and he's incredibly physical once he breaks through the line. He's instinctive and has a nose for the ball, and his pass-rushing abilities will only improve over time.

With the offer now sent, Ohio State's focus can shift to getting Epenesa in Columbus for an official visit.

Chevin Calloway, 4-Star Cornerback (2017)

The Buckeyes have been very active in the state of Texas over the last month.

After receiving a commitment from the Lone Star State's top quarterback for 2016 in Tristen Wallace on April 15, the Buckeyes sent out high-profile offers to Jeffrey Okudah and Baron Browning, two 5-star studs from the state, over the last three weeks.

Last Wednesday, the Buckeyes went back to that well and offered Chevin Calloway, a 4-star cornerback out of Dallas.

The standout defensive back with a reported 4.45 40-yard dash has collected 19 offers to date, highlighted by Texas, Texas A&M and TCU. And while 247Sports lists that he's warmest to Baylor, Notre Dame and Oklahoma, it's too early for any recruiting expert to wager a guess as to where he'll end up.

It's safe to assume more schools will be joining the Buckeyes moving forward. In fact, LSU and Illinois offered Calloway on the same day Ohio State did just last week.

MJ Webb, 4-Star Defensive End (2017)

Epenesa wasn't the only elite defensive end on the receiving end of a Buckeyes offer last week.

The other went to MJ Webb, a 4-star stud out of Madison, Georgia. Rated the No. 103 player overall for 2017 and the third-best strong-side defensive end, Webb is one of the country's most highly recruited pass-rushers.

Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Penn State and Tennessee make up an elite offer list, but the home-state Georgia Bulldogs lead the pack, according to 247Sports.

Can the Buckeyes continue their hot streak in the state of Georgia?

Since Meyer took over in 2012, Ohio State has landed Peach State prospects such as Vonn BellTrey Johnson and Raekwon McMillan, and it's trying to keep that pipeline open with Webb.
