2015 NFL Draft: Full Results and Grades for Each Team

Daniel RogersMay 5, 2015

It is really hard to evaluate how each team did in the NFL draft until the players actually have a chance to prove themselves in the league.

There is always a chance that a player who went into the draft with a bunch of question marks turns into a superstar once he is put in the right situation and with the right team around him, while a guaranteed lock to succeed falls flat for one reason or another.

So with all of that in mind, and the fact that nobody will really know who won the draft for at least another couple of years, let's break down some of the more perplexing picks from the 2015 draft. All of these players could be Hall of Famers by the time their careers are over, but for now, they are the selections that just don’t seem to make all that much sense.

Washington, Brandon Scherff at No. 5

Brandon Scherff is a great player—probably the best at his position in this year’s draft class. There is only one issue, though.

He is a guard, and historically, guards are not taken in the top five. Since 1995, there have only been two guards taken within the first five picks (Leonard Davis, 2001; Jonathan Ogden, 1996).

It is always murky when talking about positional value in the draft, but taking a guard so early just isn’t something you see every year.

This pick makes a lot more sense if Scherff can step in at right tackle instead of guard and help bolster the right side of Washington’s line. Otherwise, though, the value just doesn’t seem to be there:

Sure, the New York Giants were probably going to select him with the No. 9 pick had he fallen that far, and if Washington was set on the pick but couldn’t get any trade offers before taking him at No. 5, it makes a little more sense.

But there were other guards with first-round value that would have been there if Washington traded into the middle of the round: Ereck Flowers would probably still have been on the board, not to mention Laken Tomlinson out of Duke—which is why taking Scherff so high doesn’t make much sense.

Cleveland Browns, Cameron Erving at No. 19

What would a story about the draft be without some sort of indictment of the Cleveland Browns' draft process?

After taking the right player at No. 12 overall, the Browns turned around and selected a player that doesn’t seem to make much sense with their second pick in the draft, choosing interior line prospect Cameron Erving out of Florida State.

A big and talented player, there wouldn’t have been anything wrong with taking Erving if he had filled an immediate need for the team, but he doesn’t.

Projected as a center throughout the process, it's likely he will be played elsewhere if he is going to see the field at all as part of a pretty solid Browns offensive line:

With more immediate needs on the team—wide receiver is a big issue, and Nelson Agholor, Breshad Perriman and Jaelen Strong were all on the board—the Browns could have waited to improve their depth on the line. Instead, they used a high pick on a player that doesn’t really fit the rebuilding process.

There is a chance Cleveland’s front office was influenced by the Cowboys' success running the ball last season behind one of the top offensive lines in the league, but for a team that has Dwayne Bowe as a possible starting receiver, there were other picks that would have made more sense.

Indianapolis Colts, Phillip Dorsett at No. 29

Next year’s Indianapolis Colts offense should be Andrew Luck, four receivers and a tight end on every play. It would fix the issues in the running game by eliminating it entirely, and it would be some of the most entertaining football since the St. Louis Rams of the late 1990s.

If that isn’t the case, though, and the offense looks less like a video game and more like, well, an NFL offense, then the selection of wide receiver Phillip Dorsett is questionable:

Dorsett, as with the other players on this list, mind you, is insanely fast; he recorded a sub-4.3 40-yard dash time at his pro day and was a little undervalued by not getting more consideration with the other top receivers in the draft.

But the Colts should not have been in the market for a receiver with their first pick. With one of the best receiving corps in the league—T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief and Andre Johnson were all going to vie for Luck’s attention in 2015, not to mention tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen—there wasn’t much of a need for yet another pass-catcher.

Giving Luck more and more weapons is never a bad thing, but with players like Malcom Brown and Landon Collins still on the board, it would have made sense for Indianapolis to go the defensive route instead of picking up a player that doesn’t add much to what is already on the team.

Opposing defenses are going to fear when the Colts go to a four-receiver set next year, but unless they spend 90 percent of the game throwing the ball, this one really is a head-scratcher.
