Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Results: Most Shocking Moments of Much-Hyped Fight

Steve SilvermanMay 3, 2015

Floyd Mayweather Jr. walked into the ring at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as an undefeated fighter, and he walked out the same way.

That was the way most expected the fight to go, although Pacquiao had tremendous support in the arena Saturday night and from his fans around the world.

Much of the pre-fight analysis centered on Mayweather's brilliant defensive skills and Pacquiao's ability to break that sort of talent down with his rapid-fire punching ability. Many long-time boxing observers believed that Pacquiao's offensive skills and talent at throwing unexpected punches from multiple angles would represent a huge challenge for Mayweather.

If Pacquiao could have gotten through with his combinations early and dictated the pace of the fight, the results might have been different. But Mayweather got off to a fast start and took the first round. That allowed Mayweather to feel confident and plant a seed of doubt in Pacquiao's mind.

Mayweather did not do a lot in the first round, but he did catch Pacquiao with a hard right-hand punch in the round that appeared to get the challenger's attention. It was somewhat shocking that Mayweather was ready to fight from the start of Round 1, while Pacquiao got off to a slow start given the circumstances. Pacquiao had to fight from behind from the start, and that kept him from fighting at his best.

Pacquiao had two good moments in the first half of the fight. He backed Mayweather into the ropes in the third round and got off a series of blows that earned him credibility and showed he could hurt Money. However, Mayweather blunted that attack by tying up the smaller Pacquiao. Mayweather would employ that strategy at several points during the fight.

In the fourth round, Pacquiao got off perhaps his best punch. He fired a straight left hand, and Mayweather went backward after absorbing the blow. Seeing Mayweather absorb any solid punch is shocking, and then seeing him go backward is a real eye-opener. When Pacquiao followed up with a flurry, Mayweather gave the obligatory shake of his head to indicate that he wasn't hurt.

Which really meant he was. However, Mayweather used his sharp left jab to blunt Pacquiao's rally. Mayweather's jab is not always that effective, but it was in this fight as he controlled the distance against the aggressive Pacquiao with that punch at key moments throughout the fight.

Pacquiao had another impressive moment in the sixth round when he fired a series of straight lefts that backed Mayweather to the ropes again (another shocker), but he could not sustain the attack. From that point forward, Mayweather's defensive skills at evading and blocking punches was the key factor in the fight.

One aspect of the fight that was shocking to the Pacquiao camp was Mayweather's foot speed and quickness. Prior to the fight, trainer Freddie Roach said that Mayweather's movement skills had diminished, and that Pacquiao would take advantage of that situation.

Mayweather may not have showed off his speed in recent fights against Canelo Alvarez and Marcos Maidana, but he did against Pacquiao. He darted in and out of the pocket with ease, and that shocked Roach, who was apparently victimized by his own wishful thinking.

Mayweather won the fight in a unanimous decision, and while he has been highly critical of Pacquiao over the years, he was shockingly gracious after the fight.

"He's a hell of a fighter. I take my hat off to Manny Pacquiao," Mayweather told the media after the fight. "Now I see why he's one of the guys at the pinnacle."

"He is a true champion at heart, and we both did our best tonight. When the books are written, it will be a great fight."

Mayweather may not be correct in that final assessment. It was a much-hyped fight and a history-making one when it came to ticket prices and revenue, but the drama came from Mayweather building his record to 48-0 and employing his defensive skills.

There were shocking moments, but they were few and far between as Mayweather dispatched his opponent while following the expected script.
