Kentucky Derby 2015: Video Highlights, Payouts and Churchill Downs Results
The 141st running of the Kentucky Derby has come and gone, and the time has come to look back on one of the best races in recent memory.
American Pharoah turned in a quality win Saturday, finishing with a time of 2:03.02 seconds, and left the rest of the field to sort things out on their own, logging a one-length victory. The other 17 horses held up their end of the bargain, though, namely Firing Line and Dortmund who logged second- and third-place finishes turning in equally strong efforts.
With formalities out of the way, it's time to look back on an unforgettable "Run for the Roses." Over the remainder of this article, we'll take a look at the full order of finish and payouts, and I'll walk you through race highlights to cap things off.
Let's get to it.

Predictably, both American Pharoah and Dortmund—the first and second choice among bettors—finished in the money. The two horses were both the morning-line, and post-time favorites, and they ran impressive races, though Dortmund was almost run down at the wire.
Second-place finisher, Firing Line, won the Grade 3 Sunland Derby last time out and finally got the better of Dortmund after finishing second to him in both the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis and the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity.
Rounding out the exotic bets was fourth-place finisher, and Grade 1 Wood Memorial winner, Frosted. The Tapit colt nearly caught Dortmund in the stretch run and could be a great bet should he run in the Belmont Stakes next month.
Payouts
| Horse | Win | Place | Show |
| American Pharoah | $7.80 | $5.80 | $4.20 |
| Firing Line | -- | $8.40 | $5.40 |
| Dortmund | -- | -- | $4.20 |
Unfortunately for bettors and serious handicappers, unless you were willing to put a boatload of money on Pharoah to win, there wasn't a ton of money to be made here. You could also make money in exotics (exacta, trifecta and superfecta betting), but the larger payouts we're generally accustomed to seeing in the Derby were totally nonexistent here.
If you're banking on Pharoah to win the Preakness, prep yourself for a light payday, as Odds Shark has already set him as a -150 favorite to win the 1 3/16-mile contest at Pimlico Race Course.
There is a chance to make a good deal of money if you're willing to take odds on him winning the Triple Crown, as Odds Shark has also set his odds at 5-2 to win the next two legs.
Video Highlights
The race broke in a rather predictable fashion, as both Dortmund and Firing Line staked themselves out to early leads. The race continued on that way through the second and third quarters, with Dortmund, Firing Line and American Pharoah rounding out the first-, second- and third-place runners.
The turn for home provided us with an impressive kick out from Pharoah, and it became clear that he was going to win the race as soon as he drew even at the top of the stretch.
The most impressive point of interest in this race came when Frosted flew through the stretch run, nearly stealing a third-place finish. That stretch run showed me everything I needed to see from Frosted, and he looks like a legitimate contender for next month's Belmont Stakes.
Carpe Diem was wholly unimpressive coming out of the three hole. After setting himself up with a perfect trip through the backstretch run, the Giant's Causeway colt faltered hard when making the turn for home. Ultimately, he settled for a 10th-place finish.
AP showed some impressive speed in this race, and that should serve him well as they move on to the Preakness. Closing into these relatively modest fractions, even from a length or 1.5 lengths back is impressive against this kind of field.
He'll look to follow up this impressive showing with a win in the Preakness in just two weeks.
