Best Viral Moments from College Football 2015 Spring Practice

Ben KerchevalApr 28, 2015

What would spring practices and games be if no one had a little fun in the process? The games are meaningless, after all—they're little more than glorified scrimmages—and the No. 1 goal of it all is to come out as healthy as possible.

Which is why we've compiled a list of the coolest viral moments of spring practices. From guest appearances and touchdowns in spring games to hilarious practice videos, here's everything that was great about spring.

Well, almost everything.

There are nearly 130 Division I FBS football programs out there, so we're bound to have missed some (several?) cool things out there. Feel free to share anything you have in the comments section below.

Dakota State's Dizzy Punt

1 of 10

Let's start off with a bang, shall we? Or as the case may be, a thud.

Dakota State's "Dizzy Punt" video will simply never not be funny. I've watched two times since I've started writing this.

Make that three. At the risk of my productivity, I may watch it again.

Anyway, the premise is simple: Two coaches—Trojans head coach Josh Anderson and defensive coach Cory Miller—spun around a golf club 12 times before attempting to punt a football. The results were amazing, and the added slo-mo effects were priceless.

Shhh. Don't talk. Just watch.

UCLA Student Gets Tackled by Linebacker Myles Jack

2 of 10

May we introduce to you UCLA student Danny Siegel. According to the video he put out, which can be viewed above, he's running for general representative at UCLA. As part of that video, he takes a brutal hit from Bruins linebacker Myles Jack.

Siegel is your typical college male—about 5'8" and 160 pounds. Jack, meanwhile, has about five inches and 70 pounds on him.

The video is good quality—I'd vote for him—and lasts a little over a minute. Jack's hit comes at the very end and—oh my God, is that kid still alive?

Siegel knows it's coming and that it's going to be awful. He gets alligator arms, slows down and everything.

To the students of UCLA: Will you deny Siegel your vote after he took a hit like that? What are you, monsters?

Leah Still Scores a Touchdown in Temple's Spring Game

3 of 10

Looking for one of the most heartwarming moments of spring? Look no further than Temple, which allowed Leah Still to score a 45-yard touchdown as the guest of honor in its spring game.

Some background information is in order: Still, the four-year-old daughter of Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Devon Still, captured the hearts of football fans everywhere last fall with her battle with cancer. Thankfully, that cancer is now in remission.

As part of her appearance, Leah got to conduct the opening coin toss and take a pass down the sideline for a score.

Either it just got dusty in this room or someone's cutting an onion. Either way, well done, Temple. Really, outstanding work.

89-Year-Old Kansas Fan Takes It to the House

4 of 10

We've spent more than our fair share of time dogging on Kansas for its spring game issues. So in the interest of fairness, let's point out that the Jayhawks also did something really, really cool.

Meet Bryan Sperry, an 89-year-old Kansas alum and World War II veteran who scored a touchdown in the Jayhawks' alumni scrimmage over the weekend. Rustin Dodd of The Kansas City Star has the entire story, which is worth a read.

"That was fun," Sperry told Dodd. "I didn't know if I could run."

Sperry can still move, for sure. Well done by him and everyone at Kansas.

Clemson's Injury Rehab Video

5 of 10

There are comeback videos, and then there are comeback videos. Hats off to Clemson's video team, which has produced one awesome comeback video for its injured stars.

The short video features quarterback Deshaun Watson and running backs Zac Brooks and Adam Choice, all of whom either missed part or all of the 2014 season with various injuries. As all three return to the field in 2015, their progress in rehab has been documented.

It's a cool look into exactly what goes into the recovery process. Namely, it's a lot of hard work on the player's part.

Check it out.

Darius Rucker's Touchdown in South Carolina's Spring Game

6 of 10

You like celebrity touchdowns? South Carolina has you covered.

Darius Rucker, front man for Hootie & the Blowfish and Gamecocks superfan, caught a touchdown pass during South Carolina's spring game earlier this month. Officially, it was a 22-yard pass from quarterback Connor Mitch.

The touchdown was part of South Carolina's "Off the Bench" tradition.

Rucker was hilariously wide open in the back corner of the end zone. Good job by Mitch getting it to Rucker, but where was the Gamecocks defense? Do we need to be worried that, quite literally, anyone can score on this defense?

LaQuan McGowan's Switch to Tight End

7 of 10

By now, the story of Baylor offensive lineman-turned-tight end LaQuan McGowan has been told extensively. McGowan, he of the 400-pound physique, caught a touchdown pass in Baylor's Cotton Bowl loss in January and has since made a permanent move to tight end.

In fact, McGowan was listed as a co-starter at tight end exiting spring.

To show this has been no fluke or mind game, head coach Art Briles has been using McGowan publicly during scrimmages. McGowan has been blocking and catching passes, apparently well enough that Briles likes him at a skill position.

As a fan of large men touchdowns, it's hard to say we don't agree.

Rice Signs Seven-Year-Old Cancer Survivor

8 of 10

You may not have seen him on 247Sports' composite rankings yet, but Rice just landed one of the top recruits in the country for 2015.

Meet Fre'Derick Young-Redd III—or as he prefers to be called, Ziggy—the seven-year-old Owls fan and cancer survivor who signed with Rice football head coach David Bailiff earlier this month. B/R colleague Damon Sayles has the story, and it's a great one:

"

When he talks about the new signee, Bailiff speaks of someone who will be an outstanding asset to the Rice football team. He's a young cub with the heart of a lion, particularly with the life he's lived.

For starters, he is a survivor of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or ALL, a form of cancer starting from white blood cells in the bone marrow. ALL develops either from lymphocytes, a specific type of white blood cell central to the immune system, or from lymphoblasts, an immature type of lymphocyte.

"

No word yet on whether Ziggy, who's currently listed as an "athlete," will play offense or defense, but surely Bailiff will figure out where to put him.

Steve Spurrier Goes Shirtless...Again

9 of 10

And now, we move on from a beautiful story to, well, basically a reverse palate-cleanser.

Congratulations, Internet: You get to see South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier shirtless. Again.

Spurrier is no stranger to being seen sans shirt. It's become a tradition of sorts, like the Rose Bowl or something. This year, he invited The State's Josh Kendall to work out with him at South Carolina's training facility.

Long story short, Spurrier, who is closing in on 70, whipped Kendall, who is almost 30 years younger.

In the video above, you see Spurrier and Kendall working out. Eventually, as they so often do with the Head Ball Coach, the tops come off.

Enjoy. Or don't. Either one.

Ohio State's Spring Game Losers Are Given Mulch Duty

10 of 10

A lot of programs reward spring game winners with delicious dinners. For example, the winning team from the spring game will dine on steaks while the loser gets baked beans and hot dogs.

Ohio State does it a little differently. Head coach Urban Meyer punishes the losing team (if you will) by forcing it to mulch the Buckeye Grove, an area dedicated to the program's All-Americans. This year's unlucky participants? The Scarlet team, as Doug Lesmerises of the Northeast Ohio Media Group noted:

"

The Scarlet team was primarily the first-team defense and the second-team offense. That meant expected defensive starters like linebackers Joshua Perry, Darron Lee and Raekwon McMillan; safeties Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell; cornerbacks Eli Apple and Gareon Conley; and defensive linemen Joey Bosa, Adolphus Washington and Tommy Schutt were out working.

"

You can see more photos from the "punishment" via B/R colleague Kyle Newport. A video of the Scarlet team's day in the dirt can be seen above.
