Kentucky Derby 2015 Contenders: Latest Odds and Info on Favorites
Bob Baffert has as good of a chance as anyone to be the trainer of the winner of the 2015 Kentucky Derby. As of April 22, his colt American Pharoah is the odds-on favorite to win the Derby. Per Odds Shark, the horse's odds to win the first race in the Triple Crown are 2-1.
Baffert also trains Dortmund, who sits at a fairly distant second on the odds table at 9-2. Here's a look at the latest odds for every horse in the field:
- American Pharoah 2-1
- Dortmund 9-2
- Carpe Diem 7-1
- Mubtaahij 12-1
- Materiality 14-1
- Firing Line 16-1
- Frosted 16-1
- Upstart 20-1
- International Star 25-1
- El Kabeir 33-1
- Far Right 33-1
- Itsaknockout 40-1
- Bolo 40-1
- Danzig Moon 40-1
- Tencendur 40-1
- Ocho Ocho Ocho 50-1
- Mr Z 50-1
When speaking with Jonathan Lintner of the The Courier-Journal, Baffert had an interesting comparison for his dynamic duo: "They're two different types. Dortmund, he's all lanky, built like a greyhound. This horse, (American Pharoah) he's more of a full package. Like Shaq and Kobe Bryant, you know? But they're both really good horses, and we don't know how good they really are."
So, if I understand correctly, AP is Shaquille O'Neal, and Dortmund is Kobe Bryant.

If the two horses live up to the their potential, they could be as dominant as the former Los Angeles Lakers duo in their prime.

Unfortunately for Baffert, horse racing isn't a team sport. The Derby is every horse for himself, and that could also mean the likes of Carpe Diem sneaking in to ruin the Baffert party.
Few horses have been as hot as Carpe Diem over the past few months.

The Todd A. Pletcher trained colt has won four of his last five starts. Most recently, he won the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes on April 4. It's easy to see how he could see increasingly positive odds as the race approaches. Pletcher has only had one Derby winner in his career.
That came in 2010 when Super Saver won the event. For Baffert, winning the Run for the Roses seemed like it would become old hat in 2002 when War Emblem became his third winner in a six-year span; however, he hasn't been the man behind the winning horse since War Emblem was victorious.
We'll see if either he or Pletcher can break their droughts May 2.
