Scott Quigg Offers Carl Frampton £1.5m Cheque for Manchester Fight

Rory MarsdenApr 7, 2015

British boxing fans may finally be set to see Scott Quigg and Carl Frampton go head-to-head after the Englishman offered his rival a whopping £1.5 million on Wednesday to try to tie down a Manchester clash.

The WBA super bantamweight champion is hoping to tempt Frampton to the Manchester Arena for a July 18 bout, with Quigg's promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, putting up the money to hopefully seal the deal, per boxing reporter Gareth A Davies:

Both boxers are undefeated. Quigg's record stands at 30-2-0, while IBF world super bantamweight champion Frampton is 20-0.

Frustration has been evident as a fight between the British pair has failed to be rubber-stamped, and 26-year-old Quigg is hoping to end the standoff once and for all with the latest offer.

Quigg is confident the fight will go ahead, stating that the public deserves at least one British superfight this summer, per Sky Sports: "There's two superfights in Britain at the minute, Kell Brook versus Amir Khan and Scott Quigg versus Carl Frampton. One of them needs to happen, and I do believe me and Carl Frampton will happen."

However, his confidence may be mislaid, with the 28-year-old Frampton's response to the latest offer not necessarily overly enthusiastic, per Cyclone Promotions:

"

My team and I have been in negotiations with Matchroom Sport to co-promote this fight. It has been made very clear to Matchroom Sport throughout the entire negotiation period that this huge domestic fight can only take place as a co-promotion. It is therefore frustrating that Matchroom have deviated from negotiations with this offer.

"

Cyclone and Frampton are clearly unhappy that Hearn and Quigg have so publicly called them out in hopes of confirming the fight, with the stunt potentially set to stall negotiations further.

Former world champion Barry McGuigan is Frampton's manager, and he will have to be convinced before any fight can be green-lit.

But the hope from all British boxing fans will be that negotiations can be resolved for a summer bout. After the excitement elicited by Carl Froch and George Groves' Wembley clash last year, similar anticipation could be built for Quigg vs. Frampton.

As ever with boxing, though, a number of issues have to be ironed out before the fight can be confirmed.
