The incident occurred Saturday when shots were fired at the club's bus. No players suffered injuries during the attack, although the bus driver was hospitalized, according to BBC Sport.
The Sun provided a photo of the bus following the shooting, complete with bullet holes in the windshield:
In the wake of such a dangerous situation, Fenerbahce called for the Turkish Super Lig to halt play and focus on rectifying the situation, per a club statement (via BBC Sport): "As Fenerbahce, we think it's unavoidable to suspend the league until this dark attack is enlightened. ... It is the end of the football and blood has been spilled. Fenerbahce's irrevocable priority is for the culprits to be found and punished immediately."
Turkish Interior Minister Sebahattin Ozturk didn't initially share that sentiment, according to AFP's Burak Akinci (via Yahoo Sports): "I don't think this is a situation that requires a suspension or cancellation."
The league ultimately sided with Fenerbahce, and it is certainly difficult to argue with the decision.
As important as the sport of football is in Turkey, ensuring that a similar situation doesn't occur is far more vital.
It is unclear what preventative measures the Turkish Super Lig can or will take moving forward, but it is clearly an issue that must be addressed.
