Why Angel Di Maria Is Not the Right Signing for Paris Saint-Germain This Summer
Last summer, after their capture of David Luiz from Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain were also heavily linked with a move for Real Madrid forward Angel Di Maria, per the Daily Mail's Rory Keane. Twelve months on, although a very talented player, the Argentine would not be the right signing for PSG this summer.
Reports suggested that Di Maria was interested in making a move to Paris, but after spending £50 million on Luiz, Financial Fair Play restrictions meant that there was no money left in the pot for the Ligue 1 club to make an approach that Real Madrid could consider.

With the form of countryman Ezequiel Lavezzi dropping, it was easy to see why the club were interested, and although the former Napoli man has regressed further, any move for Di Maria now wouldn't make the most sense if PSG want to continue to grow.
It is easy to look at Di Maria's form in the Premier League and dismiss any move for the struggling winger, but there is obviously still a good player there and perhaps a change of scenery would do him the world of good.
The problem with trying to put together a bid for Di Maria this summer is that there are other areas of the PSG squad that need more urgent work than what the Argentine would bring to the attack.
Also, PSG would be spending all their money on one player again—just like they did with Luiz last season—and even then they would still have to sell players to make any move happen.
John Cross of The Mirror has suggested that PSG are ready to offer Manchester United the £59.7 million that the English club spent last summer. Current FFP limitations will restrict PSG to only spending £60 million this summer. Part of that has already been promised to Toulouse FC to complete the permanent move for Ivorian defender Serge Aurier.
To create enough money to even consider a move for Di Maria, they would need to sell before they could buy.
Without making any changes to the attack this summer, Laurent Blanc would have six attacking options at the club, more than enough to take on the new season. However, it's the midfield trio that is lacking in quality and variety.
Thiago Motta and Yohan Cabaye have struggled this season, with both looking less and less likely to enhance the midfield trio next season. Even if they don’t leave the club this summer, it would leave just Blaise Matuidi, Marco Verratti and Adrien Rabiot as players Blanc could look to build the team’s future around.
David Luiz played there in the Champions League, but Blanc wouldn't be able to move him there permanently as it would then leave the club short in central defence. If PSG were to spent over £40 million on just one player this summer, it would make more sense to sign a midfielder to help improve the club’s starting XI.
Di Maria is a wonderful player, but spending that money on him wouldn't be the smartest piece of business with the players Blanc currently has available. There is a chance that selling extra players would bring more income, but they would have to sell marquee players to gather enough capital to make a move for Di Maria.
Although David Luiz has made an impact on the squad, there is still a sense that the club overspent on the Brazilian defender.
For PSG to once again go big on a player who isn’t exactly what they need, plus taking away the ability to strengthen in areas where they are weaker, would be another mis-spent summer for the Parisian club.
