Blind Darts Player Investigated for Benefit Fraud Because He's So Good at Darts
Robert Boon is great at darts.
He's also blind.
For some people, the two don't compute.
Boon decided to use his amazing talent to try to raise money so that could he buy two guide dogs.
He organised a 10-hour darts event, but when he racked up 61,000 points, including one 180, some people got suspicious, and he was reported for potential benefit fraud.
Boon told John Bett of the Daily Mirror how he felt after receiving a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions asking him to attend a meeting:
"I felt humiliated because I don't think it is right to report me when I have tried to do something good. I rang the hospital to get my medical records on my eye condition. I don't see why people should put me down. I feel really intimidated now.
I am registered blind and can't see virtually anything out of one eye and shadows in the other. To be fair when I spoke to the DWP they said they would not be taking the benefits away.
"
Despite the stress of the ordeal, Boon said he was going to keep up his fundraising efforts. We wish him well.
