Toronto Maple Leafs' Awards for the 2014-15 Season

James OnuskoMar 30, 2015

While a handful of games remain for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the 2014-15 regular season has effectively been finished for months.

Once again, the Leafs won't be playing any games in the NHL's second season. The focus will turn to the 2015 NHL draft, possible free-agent signings and the promise of the 2015-16 campaign.

Still, there were a few bright spots in 2014-15. Let's take a look at the Maple Leafs' award winners based on the 2014-15 regular season.

Most Underrated: Leo Komarov

1 of 4

Leo Komarov is the kind of player who doesn't receive a lot of fanfare but is capable of influencing the outcome of a game. Komarov can play in all situations and be slotted in on several lines.

The native of Narva, Estonia, has 25 points in 57 games this season. His career totals are 34 points in 99 games.

He's now 28 years old and is entering the prime of his career. There is a sense that he could be a regular 40-point forward in the NHL.

Komarov doesn't take a night off. He's physical, can generate offence and he plays an inspiring game. He hits to leave a mark and will not back down from opponents who take exception to his physical play.

He's established himself as a top-nine NHL forward. The winger could play a significant role as the club looks to retool in the next few seasons. He could help stabilize the core group of forwards with his steady play.

Hardest Worker: Richard Panik

2 of 4

The Leafs need more hardworking skaters. On too many nights, there have not been enough skaters willing to do the heavy lifting required to win hockey games. The team is not talented enough to get by on skill alone.

Richard Panik has been one noticeable exception to the issue of not working hard enough regularly. He's a player who doesn't have a lot of skill but has played several very good games in 2014-15.

He has 16 points in 70 games but is often played only 10-12 minutes a game. He doesn't get a lot of opportunities offensively, yet he seems able to find the internal motivation to give a full effort on nearly all of his shifts.

He's a waiver-wire player who has outplayed many higher-paid Leafs this season on several occasions. The Slovak winger deserves to stay in Toronto beyond this season.

Most Promising: Morgan Rielly

3 of 4

Morgan Rielly has the tools to be not just good but exceptional.

He's years ahead of most of his peers. He thinks the game extremely well and has the physical ability to be a perennial threat to win the Norris Trophy in the future.

As the Leafs improve and surround him with better players, expect Rielly to begin to get wider recognition for his play.

He has 27 points this season and is the second-most prolific scoring defenceman for the Leafs behind captain Dion Phaneuf. Rielly has also become reliable in all three zones.

He should have a chance to further develop his skills at the World Championships this spring when Team Canada is formed. Expect nothing but improved play from him next season.

Most Outstanding: Phil Kessel

4 of 4

Phil Kessel is never going to be the most popular Maple Leafs player. He is not a natural leader and doesn't aspire to win any congeniality contests. His tantalizing skill and big contract makes him a focal point when things aren't going right for the club.

He is a sublime talent, though, and despite a subpar year he has been the Leafs' best player in 2014-15.

He has earned 24 goals and leads the team in points with 57 in 76 games. At his best, Kessel is one of the more intimidating scorers in the world off the rush. He has excellent speed and can take over a hockey game when so inclined.

The Leafs have to focus on arming Kessel with an upper-tier playmaker. With a matching talent as a centre, he could challenge for NHL scoring championships regularly.
