Events Preview
Let's be honest, folks—while watching the skills competition and the three-point shooting contest are fun, we're all tuning in for the dunk contest. And after seeing dunks like this one from last year's winner, Grayson Allen, why would we honestly care about anything else?
Of course, if you tuned in last year you'd also have seen Karl-Anthony Towns and Kelly Oubre in action. You might have caught Duke guard Tyus Jones winning the skills competition as well. While the McDonald's All American Game is the true showcase of next year's top incoming college freshmen, the skills competitions are a great chance to see them having a bit of fun.
This year's event will also feature the future stars of the college game, and perhaps the NBA game as well.
Ben Simmons is the player everyone will be watching. The top overall prospect in the 2015 class and a future LSU player, Simmons has been collecting awards this winter and will have the chance to prove he's worth the hype against the other top players in the country.
Heck, he's even joking around with famous sportswriter and Grantland founder Bill Simmons on Twitter:
Of course, the Chicago crowd will be most interested in supporting Jalen Brunson, this year's Mr. Basketball of Illinois. Brunson may not be the most physically gifted player in the gym during the events, but it's hard to imagine anybody else has outworked him over the years.
"I missed a lot of things socially, I missed a lot of things with my friends," Brunson told Mike Helfgot of the Chicago Tribune. "I'm the type of guy, if I didn't do anything to get better that day, I'll go the gym at 11 on a school night to shoot. It doesn't feel like work. It feels like something I love doing, the way some people collect cards or action figures."
Or the way Simmons has been collecting awards, perhaps.
From whatever angle you choose to view these events and the eventual All America Game, it's hard not to get excited about seeing the future talents of basketball show off their abilities and skills. Come for the dunk contest, stay for the preview of things to come.
